Hello moms, My 14yr old daughter has long hair and is ready to go short again before entering High School in the fall. She would like to donate it to "Locks of Love". Does anyone have more info on what to do and if there is a salon in Aurora that has done this before. Thanks! Jenny

So What Happened?

Hello Moms! Thank you so much for all of the info for Locks of Love! I brought my daughter to Ulta Salon in Oswego for her free cut last night. They were wonderful and will even send in her hair for us. My daughter brought her best friend with and we took lots of pictures. My daughter is thrilled with her new hair! I might even have to have my own hair styled there. Thanks Again!!!! Jenny & Family

I just participated in the Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society in Oswego. There was a salon there that was persueing people to donate for Locks of Love. I do not remember the Salon, however I do have some of the organizers phone numbers and emails. They should be more than happy to help. Try Maggie Kluck ###-###-#### or ____@____.com or ____@____.com luck! I have done it once years ago and it is a wonderful gift to give.

Hi Jenny. My daughter who is 9 did this last summer at Fantastic Sams and you just go in and tell them, they will cut your hair, give you the form and the hair in a pony tail and you send it in. It is simple and the best thing is, you get your hair cut for free too. We are going to do it again before school starts. She does not want to cut her hair again, but she does not take care of it like she should, and it is so much easier short. I get my hair done there too. THey have given me two perms and they turned out great and my daughter has gotten her hair cut there a few times. It is the one on Douglas right by the subway where Jewel is.

If you go on their site (locksforlove.org?) they have a listing of salons that participate as well as a FAQ page talking about how long the hair has to be, etc.

What a great thing for your daughter to do!

I see you've gotten all the information that you'd need regarding this, but I just wanted to let you know that my 4 year old granddaughter donated her hair earlier this year. She had been bugging her mom for a couple months to get it cut, and when Mom finally agreed, the director at her day care asked her if she was going to donate it. She turned to me and asked, "What's donate?" So, once it was explained to her, that's what she was determined to do! She didn't have enough for Locks of Love, but we mailed in her hair donation, we took pictures before, during, and after the haircut. And now she's growing it long again so she can do it again some day! I'm so proud of this little girl!!!

All of the Hair Cuttery's do it. Her hair cut would be a tax write off, there will be a consent form you will need to fill becaus she is a minor (it takes about a minute), and Hair Cuttery does the rest. Jen is really good at the one on N. Aurora. I used to work there. Also she will need to be able to donate 10 inches minimum.

I just wanted to say thank you to your daughter for doing this! My daughter has alopecia areata, an incurable autoimmune disease that causes hair loss. This is not life threatening, but is life changing. HOw wonderful to help provide a wig for children who have lost their hair!
That being said, many salons will do this for you. Maybe not all, but give your fave salon a call and ask.

You can go to any salon really. Donation information is available on the Locks of Love website. Make sure your daughter meets all the requirements first and then once her hair is cut (must be in a pony tail first) there are instructions on the site on how to make the actual donation.

Hi J.,

JC Pennys at the Fox Vally mall is a Locks of Love sponser. I donated my hair (13 inches of it) three years ago when I was pregnant with my son. After cutting it they sent it away to the organization and did everything for me. Also, by donating her hair they will give your daughter a free hair cut. It is a wonderful organization. I'm sure you are very proud of your daughter for thinking of such a wonderful thing to do!

Ulta salon in Oswego does this, and the haircut, style, everything is free for doing so.

I see that you have received alot of information that you wanted for locks of love. I wanted to tell you that there was another place to donate hair also. Pantene beautiful lengths. There was some controversy about Locks of Love, I don't know if it is true or not, but Hilary Swank and I think Brooke Shields have contributed to the pantene foundation. Also, the hair only needs to be 8" long. Here is the website: http://www.beautifullengths.com/en_US/index_home.jsp.

Just in case you want more information.

Great Clips will collect hair (assuming at least 10 inches in length) and provide a new haircut for free - I provided a tip back to the stylist.

Other salons with do this too but I have only provided hair once for locks of love.

Your daughter will eventually receive a lovely postcard acknowledging her hair donation from locks of love.
