We've recycled batteries at Ikea. I also saw a box in the Naperville Circuit City--call a Circuit City near you. Our local elementary school collects used batteries for a current project as does a local Boy Scout Troop.

Additionally, there is an on-going weekly hazardous waste collection site in Naperville that collects used batteries as well as other materials, located behind Fire Station #4, 1971 Brookdale Road. It is open Saturdays and Sundays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., excluding holidays. If you have questions about the City’s household hazardous waste collection program, please call the Department of Public Works at ###-###-####, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Accepted items include:

*Household cleaners, drain openers
*Paints (oil based only)
*Mineral spirits, strippers, solvents
*Insecticides, herbicides
*Flammables, automotive fluids
*Fluorescent fixtures
*Household batteries
*Unknown hazardous substances

I was saving mine up to recycle and took them to batteries plus. They told me that I can throw them away.
I checked earth911.org and they too will tell you that they no longer recycle batteries.

You do need to recycle rechargeable batteries. So any of the places that the other moms listed including Batteries Plus will take the rechargeable batteries.

Radio Shack and Best Buy locations take batteries.

I *think* that IKEA accepts batteries for recycling.

Walgreens also takes batteries for recycling. Just hand it to anyone at a cashier counter.

We save ours and last fall gave them to collection event at the wayne township building on north ave. I think it's a once a year event. I hope that it's better than throwing them out to send to a landfill, but I'm not sure what they do with them. Kid gear/toys use a lot of batteries!!

I used to take my batteries to the Naperville hazardous waste recycling place on Rt. 59 south of 88. But now I know that modern batteries can just be thrown away. they are no longer a threat to the environment. If you have any batteries made outside of the U.S. though...those should be disposed of as hazardous waste. If you check the Naperville city website it will give you exact directions to the recycling center. They will also list what else they accept (including paint) and their hours. Hope this helps!
