Seeking Information on Pre-K Programs in the San Jose Area

I am looking for an independent Pre-K program. My son has just been evaluated and it was suggested that Junior Kindergarten would be best for him. I am currently at Mulberry School (which I LOVE), but just want to look at my other options too. I am interested in child centered education, rather than teaching in order to pass a test. Any suggestions and personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

You MUST check out St. Stephen's School, South San Jose.

It has high academic standards but a wonderful environment. Of this year's 8th grade graduates 100% got into their first school of choice - Bellarmine & Notre Dame.

They do not "teach to the test" and go beyond the text book with learning tools. All students enjoy art, music & religion. The school is episcopal so there is a great diversity at the school. (The curriculum is NOT religious in anyway.)

(I have 2 daughters that attended there from preschool to 8th grade. One is still there in middle school. The school really prepares them well.)

I had my kids at Achiever Elementary at Church on the Hill. It was great. They had a wonderful pre-K.

I highly recommend checking out Almaden Country School. My daughter is currently enrolled in their Jr. K program and she loves it! They really emphasize social and emotional growth at this age rather than over focusing on curriculum. The teachers are very warm and loving. My son (who is now 11) also went through this program and it was really great to let him have that extra year. He is now in 6th grade and we are still loving the school.

Hope this helps!

Hi there! I am not sure where you are in SJ, but I live on the Los Gatos/San Jose/Campbell area. My son goes to an excellent JR.K program at Action Day/Primary Plus in Saratoga (near Saratoga Ave/Lawrence Exp)--but there are lots of Action Day school campuses around so they should offer one in your neighborhood! I too am a stay at home mom, and felt that Josh had to interact with kids his age, so I started him at the school at 3 1/2 to help with potty training and socialization. He has come a LONG way. He is such a happy kid now and is learning so much, in a fun positive way. Highly recommended program!

I think their website is: www.actiondayprimaryplus.com

If your son has been evaluated and they suggest Pre K, put him in it! I don't have a suggestion of a particular school, but Pre K programs are great. They give the child and extra year to grow while still attending school. It's kind of a win/win situation. Your child is on the young side. Good luck!

Check into Future Assets. It is located close to 85 and DeAnza. Their philosophy and way of teaching might be exactly what you are looking for. If you call the director and meet with her, she will be able to fill you in on all the details, plus the facilities are wonderful and so is their reputation. Good luck. I am looking for a infant care for my daughter. Unfortunatly I have to go back to work. It has been hell trying to find something that is descent. I am going to ask for help myself.

There is a great preschool in Sunnyvale, simply called Community Preschool. They have Pre-K classes, as well as classes your 2 1/2 year old could attend. My son attended this school starting at age 2 1/2 until he started Kindergarten. My son had speech delays and some fine motor delays at the time. Besides Community Preschool, he also saw a speech therapist and an OT (not associated with the school). The school has such wonderful, caring teachers who seem to have a natural ability to impart knowledge. With the guidance of the teachers at Community Preschool, my son was more than ready to start Kindergarten when the time came. He is about to turn 7, and is in first grade, and excelling. He has no more delays in speech, and received an Academic Student of the Month award this year for excelling in both math and reading. I attribute much of this to the excellent groundwork laid at Community Prescool. My daughter, just turning three, (no delays) now attends the school. I highly recommend it.
