My family and I are moving to the Memphis area at the end of May (we're from Michigan) because my husband just got a job in southeast Memphis off of Delp St. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me where the good areas are to rent a home in, but not too pricey? And also what grocery stores are in the area and what Drs offices there are that good with small children (we have 3, ages 3 1/2 years, 1 1/2 years, and 2 months)? Also any other information that you think would help with us relocating. I'm kinda nervous about the move, so any help is very much appreciated. Thanks so much!!

What can I do next?

I can't really help with housing or grocery stores, as I'm not familiar with that area of Memphis, but for a pediatrician, I would recommend Pediatrics East. They have several locations - Bartlett, Cordova, Germantown and Cordova (all suburbs on the east and north sides of Memphis)and great hours (early a.m., pm, Sat and Sun hours too!) Website is: http://www.pedseast.com/main/ I've been very happy with them for my 3 and 1 year old daughters.

I would caution you for housing - some areas of South Memphis can be quite dangerous, so please be careful in finding a place to live. The city schools are pretty bad, but there are some really good ones - White Station and Grahamwood are a few of the good ones. Also, the U of M runs an elementary school called "Campus School" that is supposed to be good

Now that I've read the other responses, I agree completely - look in DeSoto Cty MS for better neighborhoods, better prices and better schools!.

Best of luck!

A.

You'll either want to look around the Southaven or De Soto area of Mississippi, or look north of I-240, around the Mt. Moriah/Park area. There are some nice and economical homes in the Sea Isle area, 38119 area code area, and just west of the University of Memphis if your husband doesn't mind a bit of driving. I don't recommend renting from right behind the University of Memphis, as it gets noisy and the landlords can be awful, as well as the crime rate is a little higher there.

I've heard good things about Pediatrics East. I use Pediatric Consultants and like them, but depending on where you live, it may be a farther drive.

I don't know about grocery stores in the area of your husband's new job, unfortunately.

Check out DeSoto County Mississippi. (southaven, Horn Lake, Walls, Hernando, Olive Branch..etc)

Just across the border from Memphis, and much better neighborhoods. Plus it is closer to where your husband will be working.

Dr. Office... Memphis Children's Clinic. Dr. Lacy to be exact. Awesome.

Hi there,

Welcome to Memphis! I hope you like it here. Some decent places to rent a home would be Germantown, Cordova, Collierville and Bartlett. However, Collierville can get pretty pricey. Make sure you don't buy a home in Cordova because the town is becoming incorporated into the city of Memphis-which means all the inner city kids of Memphis will be allowed to enter those schools. It also means more taxes.

Grocery stores here are called Kroger and Shnucks. You can find them anywhere. However, many of our Wal-mart stores have a full grocery section. That way you only have to make one stop!

My daughter goes to Bartlett Children's Clinic. The Dr's there are very nice, take their time, and are more than willing to spend all the time necessary to answer your questions. They are located on Stage Road and their number is ###-###-####.

Good luck with the move! If you have any other questions, send me a message!

K.

P.S. I just read some of the other responses. I would NOT get a house near the University of Memphis. There's higher crime in that area. Mississippi would be a great place to live. You should check that out. And like I said, Kroger and Shnucks are EVERYWHERE!!

welcome to the city! it definitely is a unique area! rentals - germantown has some good rentals, buying is more expensive, but it'd be a simple commute for your husband. parts of cordova are good to rent & buy. areas of cordova won't be annexed for many years & it puts you in the germantown school district, which is a great one (not that you're concerned about that yet!) bartlett is getting a bit far for you. collierville is good, but depending on which area, could be quite a commute as well... kroger & schnuck's are the biggest grocers, but we do have a super target & walmart w/ a grocery as well.... drs - peds east is GREAT! my kids go to the cordova office & see higginbotham - he's great w/ the kids. but we've seen senter, owens, and a few others who are great. dr. bubba is really good - he's at the germantown office. hope that helps - so many people here are 'transplants' so you'll do just fine! :)

Let me be one of the first to say WELCOME!!!! If you have never lived in the south before Memphis is a great place to start! It has diversity in culture and great weather! Much of the population are transplants for everywhere else! There is always something to do!
As for where to live... CORDOVA CORDOVA CORDOVA!!! It adds a little to his commute but it is convenient to EVERYTHING! Mall, Target, Walmart, groceries, movies, boutique stores, bus line, and parks.
Cordova is known for being a family community. Germantown is a GREAT place to live, but you pay a premium for living there or breaking the speed limit driving through (wink wink). East Memphis is the older yet hipper area to live in. There are SOME places off of Winchester that are good, but a block one way or the other and you could be in a bad area. Collierville is up and coming, but it is pretty far from where you want to be. The University of Memphis area is beautiful, but not very family friendly.
I hope this helped!

Hi J.,
I am J. Zada and have lived in Memphis all of my life. If you are looking to settle down and not have to move anymore then I would suggest Bartlett, Germantown, Collierville, and Lakeland. They are all kind of pricy but it is worth the security that you feel when you are there. I lived in Germantown for a while and loved it. You feel so safe and it is very quiet. If you are wanting to go another way there is Olive Branch, MS. That is a very nice up and coming city. Taxes are cheaper in MS but they charge you an extra tax on your paycheck. State taxes I think. The gerocery stores in the Memphis and Shelby county areas are Kroger and Schnucks. The cheapest is Kroger but you have to sign up for a kroger plus card and you get the cheapest prices. There are great produce markets here also. The Farmers market on Germantown pkwy. This is the best place. Then there are easy way stores across the city.
The best Doctors for Children are the ones that I take my little girl to. They were my doctors when I was a child and my father's also. They are Doctors Segal, Kronenburg, Chiu and Eastman. They are at Poplar and Estate. Their phone number is ###-###-####. They are wonderful and have been well established in the Memphis area for a long time. I see Doctors Segal, and if he is not there then I see Kronenburg. They are very easy to get in at any time. Then if something happens after hours they volunteer at the Lebonheur urgent care across Poplar. It is called Lebonheur East.
Memphis has a good bit of nice parks that you can take the kids and let them play and you can relax under a shade tree while they play. The parks I recommend would be the any in the places I told you about living. The parks where I live in Bartlett are wonderful. I take my daughter to Freeman Park on bartlett blvd. A lot of shade, plenty of kids, swinging benches for the parents watching the kids, picnic tables, nice walking track, fields for the kids to play in, very nice playground. There is the children's museum for all ages. The Memphis Zoo is wonderful. It is cheaper to get a year's membership if you have more than one child. That is about all i can think of now. If you need help with anything when you are here you can shoot me an email. I am 24 with a prescious little girl named Alayna. My husband is a program manager for the University of Tennessee. I stay at home and we are about to buy a house in the country. my email is ____@____.com
Hope I helped a little.
Good luck,
J.

I have lived in Memphis most of my life. The south end of Memphis is not a great place to live. The further north and east you go is best. There are many suburbs of Memphis such as Lakeland, Arlington, Bartlett, and Colleirville that have great schools and such. So please do some research. Memphis is heavily gang populated so stick to the outskirts. And also try north mississippi. It is just across the border and they have great statistics, as far as crime rates and whtat not. I hope this help!
