We are moving to a relatively new area. New in the sence that I'm just trying to make sure my 2 year old (when the time comes) is going to be at a good elementry school. Everywhere I've looked you have to join a full years membership!??!?!!!

Anyone have info on the McLaughlin school in Carrollton/Farmers Branch OR on the Haggar school in Plano ISD. We grew up and went to schools in Carrollton but aren't familiar with those schools...

Thank you!!!
T.

There are parts of Farmers Branch (where I use to live) that are Carrollton/Farmers Branch Schools and some that are DALLAS ISD. Many of the Dallas ISD schools are not rated well. Be aware if you are moving to that area. -- Plano schools we looked at were rated well.

I recommend http://www.greatschools.net/ for finding out schools. You can search, then read test scores and parent reviews, and compare local schools.

T...check out www.greatschools.net. It will give you all the info you need on any school district and school in the US. It gives their ratings; as well as average testing scores, ratios of race, kids to teachers, etc. It is a wonderful site full of info! We are moving from Carrollton to our new home in Sachse next month to Wylie ISD. Im not particularly interested in the elementary in our neighborhood here in Carrollton, as its rated only academically acceptable, which could be almost recognized, or almost academically unacceptable. My hubby grew up in Plano, and Ive heard good things about Haggar in Plano. Greatschools.net is a good resource so you can research your options. Good luck and congrats on your first home!

Hi T.,
I have one in college, one in high school and one in middle school now, but finding a great school has always been my first priority when choosing a home.
Schools are rated yearly in Texas, indicating their performance status and reports for each school are available online under accountability ratings. Student teacher ratio, programs for special needs children, turnover rates, play into choices as well. Well balanced schools offer gifted programs starting at elementary and middle school level and Academic Decathlon Teams at high school levels. Elementary campuses are pretty similar, but really research middle and high schools for offerings from academic to sports teams.

Hi T.!

Just wanted to say congrats on buying a new home. Your realtor (make sure he/she is a Buyers Agent) should be a good source of info for you, not only for school info but area info as well.

I am a former school counselor and teacher and when I moved here I wasn't sure I wanted to go back into that profession again. However, just to be certain, I did a lot of substitute teaching...different cities, grade levels, etc.

In my opinion Plano Schools are superior to Carrollton schools - although there are some exceptions in any district. I believe the administration of a particular school makes all the difference in the world.

Don't judge a school just on whether it's rated exemplary or not. Those rankings are only a small part of what really makes a school a good one or not.

Personally, I like the Frisco schools and Wylie schools best. I'm not sure what price range you're looking at but Lovejoy schools have parents raving and singing the praises of teachers and that often means more than any silly rating system...don't you agree?

Good Luck with Your House Hunting!
