Seeking Honest Auto Mechanic in Katy

Hi moms, I just moved to Katy a month ago and need to have some work done on my car. I spoke to my mechanic 'back home' and know what the problem is and what needs to be done to fix it, but I contacted the dealer several days ago, who said they'd check on the availability of parts and I haven't heard anything since. I'd really rather NOT go to the dealer anyway, if I can help it. I had an awesome mechanic back home...honest almost to a fault, with super-reasonable prices. Anybody know of a similar mechanic in Katy?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I ended up going to the dealer because I really needed to get it done quickly and I was afraid an independent mechanic might have the car for several days. I needed to have a defective part replaced, an oil change, and (I believed) a tuneup. The dealer took longer than he said he would, and when he finally got back to me, of course he said I needed to have a bunch of stuff done, all totaling almost $1,000! So I called Peavy's Garage in Katy (one of referrals I got here), and the man who answered the phone said my car doesn't even need a tuneup yet--it's good for 100K miles. And the dealer was saying I needed plugs AND wires replaced. So I just had the dealer replace the defective part and do the oil change, since it was already there, and let me tell you the guy at the dealership was less than pleased! From now on if I need ANYTHING done on one of my vehicles, I will be taking it to Peavy's. Thank you so much for the great referral!

The guy we go to is not in Katy, but meets all of your other qualifications. He is near FM 529 and Eldridge, at 6940 Mayard, Houston, 77041. The name is Webb Automotive, ###-###-####. The owner is Roy Webb, and we started going to him because he goes to our church and several friends at church use him and gave rave reviews on him and his business. Here's what I tell people: last year my engine check light came on, so I went to see him. It gave a code for an oxygen sensor and catalytic converter. He replaced the defective oxygen sensor, and told me that I may or may not need to replace the catalytic converter. He said that very often, once the oxygen sensor is functioning properly, the catalytic converter will work fine. So, rather than spend $800 on a new catalytic converter that I may not need, he wanted me to drive it for a while and see if the check engine light came back on. I spent around $300 for an oxygen sensor, instead of $1100 on a sensor and converter at that time. As it turned out, everything was fine for 6 months, and then the check engine light came back on. The code was for the catalytic converter. At that time, I did replace the catalytic converter, and everything has been fine since then. I had 6 months to save up the money to replace the converter, so it wasn't the financial tight spot it would have been if he had replaced it 6 months earlier, AND at this point, we were sure it needed to be replaced. I love that kind of honesty. Also, when my mom was buying a new-to-her used car, she took a mini-van to him to have him check it out. He did a complete run-down, telling her of a couple of issues the mini-van had, and then he didn't charge her a dime to check it out, because we've been taking our 2 cars to him for several years for their regular services/maintenance. When I bought my car 6 years ago, I was going to a different mechanic, and they charged me $100 to check out the car I was looking at buying. In my opinion, he would be more than worth driving a little bit further than you originally planned! Also, I've heard good things about Christian Brothers Automotive as far as their level of service and honesty, but have also heard that their prices are a bit high.

Don't know how far you're willing to drive, but we ONLY take our car to Peavy's Auto on Hwy 6 and Westpark. It's a bit of a drive, but it's worth it to know we're getting honest people who truly care about quality work. They were top-rated and are consistently recommended by the AAA.

Hope that helps!

Rick's Hi-Tech Auto Care on Hwy 90 right in Katy. (Just past Katy High School...I think that's the name). Anyway, get off I-10 as if you're going to Tractor Supply store, take a right at that light (should now be FM 1463). Go to the end of that road (the school & Tractor Supply will be on your left), this should now be Highway Blvd I believe but we just call it Hwy. 90 or Old Katy Hwy. Then take a right at the end of that rd & it's down on your right, on the corner of Danover, just past Los Cucos Mexican Restaurant. You'll see a Blue & red colored sign that says "Rick's Hi-Tech Auto Care". Tel: ###-###-#### & their website is: www.ricksauto.com We won't use anyone else. Good Luck!

We actually have an individual that we used to attend church with that works on our cars (on the side)but he is located around the 529 / Barker Cypress area. Although we have never used them I have heard good things about Christian Brothers. My husband said they are endorsed by Dave Ramsey. They have several locations (I think I saw one on Fry near Clay) so you might want to check them out. We decided to use them if our guy isn't available. I hope this helps! God bless!

Hi Lynnette. I don't know what part of Katy you're in, but Peavy's Garage on Highland Knolls at 99 (just East of 99) is good, honest and reasonable. They've been there a long time and their number one priority is having your repeat business so they try hard to keep you satisfied. Goodluck and welcome to Katy!

We've been taking our cars to Katy Auto Care. www.katyautocare.com

They are super nice, and very honest. After they missed something the first time, he didn't charge us for the service call the next when it was fixed (just the part cost). Absolutely wonderful!
