Seeking Home Remedies for 1 Year Old with Asthma....

I have been told about purple onions and the help with young children with Asthma. My 1 year old son developed a runny nose after playing outside Monday for about 30 minutes. Progressively his breathing became labored over the next few day. After a trip to the doctor yesterday and 3 breathing treatments while we were there and 1 dose of liquid steriod... he seems better. We went home with the instructions to give breathing treatments every 4 hours today and 3 times per day for 1 week. Also, we are to give him the liquid steriod 2 times per day for 1 week.
I have been told of a 'mixture' that some give their young children which almost eliminates the asthma, or at least really helps... The recipe I received included purple onion/garlic.
Does anyone have any other ideas for home remedies? Have you heard of the purple onion mixture? Do you have a recipe you are willing to share?
Of course we will continue the medicine as prescribed, but if we can make this ashma go away so my very active little boy is able to play with his friends outside when he is older... that would be GREAT!
Please share!

Allergy medicines diring seasons because it usually triggers it the most and you can give it to them to pervent it. However you need to talk to you doctor and find out what triggers it so you wont be giving medicine all the time. Their is this great allergy medicine that is drug free its $13 and its for younger kids. You can also go online and look up AsthmaReliefCenter.com it has an article on how to bet asthma in 90 days using home remedies.

Sounds like allergies to me...I got rid of nearly all of my kids' allergies through an acupressure treatment called NAET. I used Dr. Steve Homoky at Coit & Spring Creek, ###-###-####. He can help adults, too, but he uses needles for the grown-ups. The results have been permanent, too. I used to be severely lactose intolerant, but now I can have my cheesecake and sour cream enchiladas without any trouble! Good luck, and pat yourself on the back for being a good mama to look for alternatives!

There is a good book that you may be able to find in the library called Healing the New Childhood Epidemics:Austism, Asthma, ADHD, and Allergies. It is written by Dr. Kennenth Bock. Consider testing your child for food allergies via IgE and food sensitivies via IgG blood testing. Also milk is very mucous forming and the most common allergen. I hope your little one feelw better soon.

Hi B.,
Sounds like you have gotten some great advice! My advice is try to get off the meds and go natural! I grew up with a sister who had asthma and still battles it to this day. She takes steriods and alot of other medicines. I have seen her struggle with all the side effects of the medications and still her asthma is bad.
At 2 my daughter was diagonesed with asthma and I chose to not go with the route my Doctor wanted me too. I took her to the Chiropractor and also a Naturpathic Doctor. We did diet changes and also some different herbs like Lobelia, you can get it in liquid form from Natures Sunshine. The Nautrpathic Doctor is in Colleyville and she is amazing, her name is Joan Vandergriff and she is a very sweet and knowledgable. The business is called Alternative Health and the number is ###-###-####.
I wish the best for you and your child!
*Another thing my daugther is 21 now and only has problems about 2 times a year with her asthma!

I started reading the book, Green Goes With Everything, and have learned a lot about how indoor environment can be a cause of asthma. Indoor air quality makes a big difference with adults and especially children. Changing your cleaning products can make a big difference. Laundry detergent can also make a big difference too. I have switched to Shaklee products. Shaklee came out with the first biodegradable product in 1960--it was the first official Earth Day product. It is Basic H2 and it is great--you dilute it, so it saves you tons of money too. All products are 100% satisfaction guaranteed. You can check them out at http://www.shaklee.net/recipeforhealth/prodHou

I also make sure my 21 month old gets vitamin C and alfalfa supplements every day (he really loves them!). When he gets really congested, I give him garlic to clear it up--smelly, but it works!

I wanted to add that now through May 22, 2009, you get a free membership (gets you 15% off retail) when you make a 50 point purchase. It's all calculated in the shopping cart of the website, www.shaklee.net/recipeforhealth

We started our twins (now 7) on MonaVie juice last October and have not had to even give them a Clariton or Singular! Asthma is an inflammation in the lungs and MonaVie juice is high in antioxidants, made from 19 fruits and berries from around the world, with a patent pending process for their Acai berry, that makes it 15 times HIGHER in antixodant value than store bought bluberries. We have friends who also have their kids on it (my Mom is drinking it for asthma relief too and hasn't had to use her inhaler since last Fall) and everyone is thrilled! 2 ounces twice a day of this jucie also gets you 13 services of fruits and vegetables... There are 82 servings of fruit per bottle at around $.39 per serving - can't get that anywhere around here!

Shoot me an email if you'd like more info!

Keep in mind that your son is very young and could outgrow his breathing problems. Mine was on breathing treatments constantly from 4 months until about 3. At age 3, he started tapering off. Now, he occassionally has to have breathing treatments (he will be 6 yrs next month).

Also, he is on Singulair every day - which really helps with the seasonal allergies.

There is the concept of conditioning. You expose your child to whatever he is allergic to in very small doses at first (as much as he can tolerate without symptoms) and then extend the amount of time he is exposed until he can do whatever he wants without symptoms. The process lets his body build an immunity to his allergies slowly without endangering his health.

My son was born 16 weeks early and he just turned 4. At two years old he was back in the hospital, this time for only a month, and almost died of whopping cough. Why? Because his lungs were so weak they couldnt take the disease.

He just turned 4 last month and I am happy to report that he no longer suffers from asthma! We have only had to do breathing treatments ONCE this WHOLE winter! Yay! And that was because he came down with a virus, it was not just astham related.

I have never heard of purple onion, but here is what we have done:

1. We have always had NO chemicals in the house. Bath products, cleaners, laundry, hand soap, everything. I order from Melaleuca and have for 8 years. Some people dont like that because you have to order every month, I dont mind because I need enough stuff so it doesnt matter to me. Plus, I love their products beyond compare. But, there are other ways to do this. You can go to whole foods (I would NOT trust these new "green" cleaners from makers like Clorox, what a hoax!) or google the internet for easy ways to make some things on your own. It is very affordable either route that you choose!

2. I would take notice on when you see symptoms. Is it after he plays outside? If so, keep an eye on this for a week or so. If it is consistent, talk to the doctor about zyrtec, allergies often cause asthma to flare up and these last few weeks have been KILLER on my allergies.

3. Chiropractor. I know that sounds strange, but it works! I know of a family friends one in Grand Prairie and Keller and I am sure if you ask or look on here you can find on in your area (not sure where you are from). But it works! This made a HUGE difference in Alex's health. It takes her like 2-3 minutes, a little tap here and there and he is good to go, but it is amazing how well the body can do its own job when properly in place! :)

4. Keep up with those breathing treatments. I know they stink, but if he is having symptoms or you are trying to get him cleared up, it is the way to go. Oral Steroids taken too much can cause stunt growth. Dont be afraid to do a round here and there if needed, but if you are finding you need them once a month you need to try and figure out another way. My son was on them almost weekly for two years and his growth has been affected, we didnt have a choice because for him and most times you dont. All you can do it be preventative and hope not to get to that point. When he was 1 he loved music, so I would put CMT on real loud while he did his treatment. He loved watching it and it kept his attention, I also read to him. If you dont have one, you can order a mask that is a character shape like a dinosaur. He loved his "dino mask".

I hope this helps!

On one last note, I dont know much about MonaVie, a friend sells it and told me about it and I tried it... it doesnt taste bad. But when I was at Easter lunch, my husband's aunt who is an occupational therapist at Parkland said one of her co-worker's son had REALLY bad reflux and almost needed surgery (my son had this, which was why she was telling me this story) and she said they started him on this MonaVie after a recommendation from a friend and 2 weeks later he was totally reflux free, off medication and avoided surgery! Anyway, I thought that was so interesting! Wish I would have known two years ago, I would have given it a try!

Good Luck, please message me if you need anything! :)

B.,

I see so many children with asthma in my practice, but I also seem them get well and off all the meds. I can work either with your pedi or without, but chiropractic has definitely changed the lives of the children that I see as they are able to get back to being an active kid again without having to worry about "where is my inhaler?" And moms breath easier too knowing that they won't get an emergency call from the school or daycare. If you don't live in the Plano/North Dallas area, just let me know and I'll find you a competent chiropractor that takes care of children. Here are some research articles on the subject as I always believe that a well educated patient gets well. There are some supplements that depending on what your son's exam reveals would be recommended as well. So email me at ____@____.com directly for more info or just call our office on Monday to schedule an appt for a consultation. I hate to hear of the suffering of a child and the medical route although great for an emergency as you just experienced, it does nothing to prevent further attacks and only leads to more medication. http://www.icpa4kids.org/research/children/asthma.htm

Yours In Good Health,

Dr. Jenn

If you have not already, I would switch all your household cleaning supplies to nontoxic solutions. Indoor air quality has been linked to asthma as often as outdoor.

Hi B.,

Lucky you to have boy/girl twins! That is wonderful. You've gotten some good advice here on the asthma issues. The other piece of the puzzle is to address the nutrition. Be sure to feed your son lots of fresh, raw fruits and veggies. One idea is to take a muffin tin and fill it with cut up foods that the kids can eat without choking, like maybe cucumber circles, quartered grapes, etc. Just leave it out while they're playing and let them graze. You can view my Mamasource profile to find out about a great solution my family found for getting all of us to increase our fruit and veggie intake.

Good luck!

I do not have or know about purple onion/garlic home remedy, but I can tell you that our asthmatic occurances have been less(thank heavens, almost without any this winter/spring)with some changes that were suggested to us. The things we avoid: of course smoke of any kind, cigerette or fireplace, fragrance candles burning, strong smelling fabric softeners, strong smelling cleaning supplies, and wind. We don't have animals in our home but when we visit neighbors who have them, I stay only very short periods inside. AFter petting animals, we wash hands and arms, sometimes even change clothes. These things might sound extreme, but we went from what you are experiencing four times last winter/spring to one mild upset this year (a couple hours in wind). I really hated putting chemicals in their little body if I could find a way to avoid it. Blessings

Asthma is an allergic reaction that is occuring in your child's airways. At times asthma can be extremely severe, as in airways begin so inflammed, your child can't breath. I am not telling you not to medicate your child, that is not my place, but just be cautious and aware of what asthma really is and what it can do.
I would find the ROOT of the asthma first, and work there. My son was "diagnosed" with reactive airway (which is asthma in kids under 5, they WON'T diagnose it under 5 becuase they COULD grow out of it).
My son has a lot of allergies, and once we get rid of the allergins he is fine. He does get Zyrtec once in a while (because of outdoor allergies that i watch for on the weather reports). We haven't done breathing treatments in months. Winter and summer is usually the worse for us. Cold weather causes airways to be inflammed, and running around outside in the heat also does it.

Hope that helps!
God bless.

Hi B.,
Congratulations on trying to tackle this issue from all angles. I swear by a book called "An Encyclopedia of Natural Healing for Children and Infants" by Mary Bove, ND. The section of asthma in this book is 6 pages long, but here are some highlights:

triggers to consider: allergies, infections, irritants, emotional factors, family history, digestive disturbances, and increased toxin load.

Dietary guidelines (just a few!): avoid high-allergen foods.
avoid food additives, including sulphites.
limit animal product intake, including dairy
increase whole grains, fresh fruits and veggies
avoid processed and refined foods, such as white flour
use fresh, raw oil such as olive, flaxseed, sunflower, and sesame
give herbal teas to build up immune, digestive, and respiratory systems (these herbal remedies can be given to very young children in the form of a popsicle

Vitamins and minerals:
anti-oxidants
essential fatty acids
bioflavonids, particularly quercetin

treatments (when not emergency):
use herbal inhalants of essential oils such as lavender (also promotes emotional calming), eucalyptus (careful with this one as it is strong)
chest rubs made from relaxing and anti-spasmodic herbs can help (the chest rub also creates a strong emotional connection to mom, automatically calming the nervous system)
cranberry is an effective antispasmodic and thins mucus. use 1 cup of fresh or frozen cranberries crushed with 1 cup of warm water. Sweeten this very sour mixture, if needed, with an equal amount of apple juice.

More herbal recommendations are made.

I use this book very often and have never been steered wrong.

On another note, I am a licensed Yoga for the Special Child therapist living in Fort Worth and could help you with some breathing exercises you and your son can do together to keep the respiratory muscles strong.

Peace and Joy,
M.
