Seeking Good Brand of Formula (Possibly Organic)

Hi Moms! My sister BF her baby for the first three months, but now it's time for her to go back to work. She's desperate to find the best formula. I've heard the pre-mixed ones are good. Are there any organic formulas out there? Money is no concern. Your replies are greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

Here is a link to an article on breadfeeding and formula. Dr. Anrig is a pregnancy and pediatric specialist.

I have been told by several professionals that babies who are primarily breastfed should not be given cow's milk formula due to potential for developing allergies. Earth's Best makes an organic soy formula. Or she may be better off with a hypo-allergenic formula -- nutramigen (by enfamil)-- although this apparently does not taste that great.

Expensive doesn't always mean best. The advantage of pre-mixed are that you won't have to do anything but pour and serve, and some babies like the consistency better. It is also significantly more expensive. Go to Target and read the ingredient list for Enfamil, Similac, and Target brand. You'll find they are all the same. Yes, breastmilk is the ideal source of nutrition for babies, but many many many children have survived and thrived on formula as well. There's absolutely no need to stress about it. Your sister should consult her pediatrician and get his/her advice as well.

Hi D.-I have been into organics and holistic for many years. Honestly in all of the research that I have done formula is terrible on baby's digestive and immune systems. Breast milk is best-can she pump at work?? I have four children and formula for two of them were a nightmare. There are some good websites to check for info www.mercola.com, www.organicconsumers.org. There are some homemade recipes for babies-but I never used them and i do believe that mercola's website has a recipe. If she has to do it check for one thing in particular on the label-the QAI symbol. There standards are very high (much more the the USDA organic stamp-which is not to say much anyways). I will do some more research today and see if I can come up with anything.

Make it a great day!!

Baby's Only - I get it at Whole Foods. It doesn't taste metallic like enfamil. It kind of tastes like those powdered shakes for adults. Decent. They have a dairy version as well as a Soy version. It costs like $10-11. There's also Earth's Best which I've heard is good but that costs like $17.

Why doesn't she pump? Mother's milk is the best and they say at least 6 months to insure all the immunities.

Similac makes an organic formula that is widely available (Target, drugstores, grocery stores) and Whole Foods carries several brands if she has one of those stores near where she lives/shops.

I agree with those who say BFing is best, but sometimes it's hard to pump at work. Not everyone has a flexible workplace with a place to pump other than the toilet stall (yuck) or gets more than a half an hour's lunch break. Mom has to eat, too. Tell your sister whatever she decides will be fine for her child. And what a good sister you are to try to help her out. :)
