Seeking Good Book for Potty-training.

I am looking to buy a book to help me start potty-training my son. He is 2-1/2 and I am ready for him to be out of diapers. I've been noticing some signs that he's ready. He knows what the potty is. He always hides behind the couch when he's going number 2. He has sat on the potty chair a few times, but now when I ask him if he wants to go on the potty he says no. I say to him you're a big boy and big boys go on the potty, he tells me I'm not a big boy I'm a baby. Can anyone recommend a book or books that has helped them.

J.,

I am unclear, are you looking for a book for you or one for your son?
I am a homeday care provider with 2 of my own children and my best advice to you is to be firm but supportive and encouraging. Do not ASK if he has to go potty but tell him that it is time for him to go sit on the potty and see what he can do. Read him his favorite story or play a game with your shower curtain, anything to keep him distracted from what he is actually doing and then praise him like crazy...you could even try to give him an m&m when he goes without giving you any problems. In the beginning it is best to take him to the bathroom approximately every 30 minutes or even a little less if you notice that he is wet when you go, until he gets to know the feeling. At this point it is the parent and not the child that is being potty trained.
With a strong will on your part and a little cooperation on his he will be potty trained within a month, that is except for napping and nighttime.
I hope this helps, but I have trained many of kids this way and have never had it fail.
Remember be strong you are the boss and make sure he knows how proud of him you are.
GOOD LUCK!
J.

We have 2 books that my daughter enjoys, though I'm not sure how much they factored in her potty training. She reads them on the potty... there's one called "The Potty Book" and they have a girls version and a boys version. She has mentioned going "like Hannah" (the girl in the book) a few times anyway. THe first one we got was "A Potty for Me" which is a lift-a-flap book (I got on Amazon) and that one definitely engaged her attention anyway. She's 27 months and basically completely trained now, aside from nights.

Hi J.,
My daughter turned 2 in January and has been potty trained since she was about 20 months. The book/video that helped us most is "Once upon a potty" They are gender specific, Prudence for the girls and Joshua for the boys. My daughter also loves Elmo and we got her the Elmo potty video. Both helped us a lot and now she is in panties during the day and pull ups at night.
Hope this helps.

We used The American Academy of Pediatrics book on potty training - gave me a solid understanding of the signs, what to do and say, how to avoid problems and what to do should they occur, etc. Loved it!

For the kids, we read the Potty Book recommended below, an Elmo one and occasionally watched Big Bear in the Potty House. Both of my kids showed interest at 18 mos so we encouraged it, but didn't push it and both went occasionally and became quite comfortable with it.

When they were ready (signs from tha AAP bk), we used immediate rewards and a big sticker chart. Within a day, both were trained - day, naps, home, away, night, etc - just around 2 and a half. Both wanted to be a Big Girl/Boy since we talked about and showed them what happens when they are big (each child has their own trigger points for that one!)

Good luck!

HI. I went through this will all of my boys. They did the same exact thing. I learned not to force it. Just encourage it. Yes, I bought books even went to the library for them and my eldest helped pick it out. We read it and read it. Because he wanted to, we sat on the potty. Number 1 came first of course, number 2 took a bit, but got the hang of it. With him taking the lead, it took less than a week. This is because they were READY. Meaning THEY WERE READY. Not me, I was ready like right after they were born for them going to the bathroom by themselves.lol Each one of my boys did it at different ages. My youngest, who is now 5, did it in 2 days and because He wanted to do it. He was 3 at the time that he was trained

I am finding that the Once Upon a Potty is a good book. It is helping my daughter become interested in going. Also, if you want a book for yourself I like "Potty Training for Dummies." My daughter is not potty-trained yet, but it's helping me in preparing her. Good luck! I know how frustrating it can be. ;-)

I didn't use a book but my little boy will be three on St. Patty's day and I have had him pottytrained since the first of the year. All I did was put him in big boy underwear, and we made a big deal about ot telling him all the people that he knew that wore big boy pants and letting him pick all the underwear that we bought, anyways, yes we had some accidents and some messes for the first few days but after that he got the hang of it in about two days. I think it was the feeling of being wet and really being able to feel it. As for pooping we used a chart and everytime he went poop he got a sticker and after every 15 times he went poop in the potty he got some kind of little prize (ex.. matchbox car etc.. nothing major.) Hope this helps. can't hurt to try right?

Thankfully, my 3.25 year old FINALLY is potty trained. Although he still insists he's a baby, not a big boy :-)

So if interested, email me your street address and I can send along a couple of books we won't need anymore (they're just cheap paperbacks and light, no big deal.) One is Koko Bear's New Potty, and the other is about animals and how they use the potty.

i just laughed when i read your posting. that is exactly what my 2 1/2 old boy does. we have a potty book, but it really isn't the motivation for him. i just have to know his potty schedule and make sure i am with him at that time. grab him and run to the bathroom. praise, praise, praise when he goes on the toilet. if you figure out a way to do it, please share it!
thanks!
