Seeking Good Ant Killer

my husband spilled a soda and didn't clean it up properly which has caused an influx of ants. I have cleaned the area thorougly and wiped it down with vinegar but it hasn't stopped them from coming. the bait traps haven't seemed to work. I used a spray that is supposed to work or your money back but it has done nothing. does anyone have any advice on what will get rid of them and is hopefully ok with kids/pets around?

I use liquid ant from lowe's. It has worked everytime for me and let me tell you I was bombarded by ants. They laid eggs all over my shed and in my lawn chairs. That is the only thing I found that works and I still use it today in my new house.

Ortho's Soy Bean Oil spray worked for us. Its safe around kids and pets. We also used the ant bait/traps they take awhile to work. I used the spray inside and outside and also continued to put down the traps at night and when we would leave for work/school. Took about two weeks but I haven't seen one in over a month!! Good luck!

Tough and Tender by Melaleuca! Absolutely kills ants! They have a Tub and Tile that kills wasps. They have all kinds of products that not only do the obvious, but have great uses you'd never think of (I have a quick reference guide). I used the Laundry Stain Remover on purple maker on my carpet--thanks to my 2 year old son :) None of their products have caustic chemicals, no ammonia, no chlorine bleach or phosphates. They are totally safe to use near kids and pets and that's why I'm a customer and I adore these products! I converted my whole house and feel better knowing my kids are safer away from ALL the other products we used to use--including baby shampoo--it had formaldehyde in it!
Yeah, the company pays you back when you refer people so I suppose that's another reason I keep telling people about Melaleuca's products. Hey, ever received a check from Wal-mart for telling someone about an ant trap?--that doesn't even work?
Melaleuca guarantees (for 60 days) every product so I highly recommend you check it out. You have to go through a member to get a membership so....

I can't help too much but wanted to reply to the thread cause we are having the same problem and I want to see your reponses. It's driving me crazyyyyyy. They are everywhere and you are right, the bait traps don't work well because they don't like to go in them. They do however work if the ant goes into the bait. This sounds crazy but I spent an hour one day waiting till I saw the ants where I knew they were. I then scooped them up and put them on top of the bait and let them go on their merry wait with the poison on them. I know it sounds mean and neurotic but it seemed to control them for atleast a week or 2 a little better than had been. My dad tells me fresh mint plant they don't like. I've heard of diatemaceous earth, but haven't used it.

Windex works very good and does not smell as bad as the bug spray.Do not get the kind without amonia that is what kills them.

The only at-home ant killer that has ever worked for me is Combat. They make a Ant killing GEL that you squirt on the perimeter of the room, but really only where you have seen them. They swarm it! It's amazing. Then by about a week later, they are dead. Sometimes I have had to use several containers of the stuff, but only when there were a ton of ants (when I see they have consumed all of one application, I put another down, etc, until I don't see them anymore). FYI - the only place I have found that actually sells the gel, is Home Depot.

You certainly wouldn't want you kids or pets playing with it directly, but if you apply it when the 2 year old is napping of something, they really shouldn't even notice that it is there.

Good luck!

diatomaceous earth! all natural, non-toxic, ants will flee from it.
now, you do have to keep yourself and littles from breathing it deeply or it will irritate the nasal passages (DE is actually very-finely ground shells, so has microscopic sharp edges- that's how it deters bugs, it puts tiny slices in their carapaces.) this is only an issue with crawly babies. just working around it and having it nearby is not a problem. it's effective for a large variety of bugs which does not, to my sorrow, seem to include stinkbugs.
NOTHING kills those varmints!

We sprinkled cornmeal. They get greedy and eat a ton of it, take it back to the queen, it swells in their stomachs and kills them. Worked for us!

I had read recently that Bounce (the fabric softner sheets) repelled ants. You are just supposed to lay it down in the area where they are.

Hello, I know what you mean...i use a product called Orange Guard, it is found in most natural food markets, it smells good. Follow the directions on the bottle and it works...find where they enter into the house and spray the trail....good luck, chelle
