Help! I hope you all can give input here. I am seeking a General Practitioner who supports breastfeeding mothers. I have been to several who are unsupportive of nursing and encourage me to wean my newborn! I would prefer a GP to have experience in Medications and Mother's Milk, for example the book by Dr. Thomas Hale MD. Anyone in the areas of the Southwestern Chicago Suburbs. Any recommendations would be SO great. Thanks a bunch!

Homefirst Medical Group is a HUGE supporter of breastfeeding. You can call their main number ###-###-#### and the receptionist can tell you where their nearest office is. They have offices in several locations around the city. They are considered an alternative medicine group but are covered under ppo and hmo. Good luck.

I live in Oak Lawn, but travel to Oak Park/River Forest for our family doc. She sees all of us and has a very laid back approach - which I love. She is a HUGE supporter of breastfeeding. Dr. Susan Locke on Lake St. in River Forest. Since my husband and I both work full time and live so far away she is always willing to answer questions over the phone (though often through her nurses) and will do her best to avoid us having to come in with a sick kid. She either gives suggestions over the phone or just calls in a prescription if necessary. She's done this for my husband and I as well.

We looked at HomeFirst. They were a little TOO relaxed/laid back for us and the doc I met with spent a lot of our interview time making me feel guilty for going back to work and tried to get me to join some work at home pyramid scheme. Just turned me off completely.

Good luck in your search for the right doc!

I'm editing my response bc I realized you're looking for a general practitioner. Sorry about that! I don't really go to the doctor so I can't help. Just in case you ever need a good ped though, here is what I had written:
That's disturbing, I am so sorry you've had that experience. Shame on them! The ped we went to after my baby was born and the one I would take her back to is Dr. Pamela J. Schulz, D.O. a pediatric doc at Dreyer Medical Clinic in Plainfield. She was VERY supportive and was very glad I was choosing to nurse. The # is 815/439-9400 and the address is 24508 W. Village Center Drive Plainfield, IL 60544 She's great!

I see Dr. Paul Panzica - Forefront Adult and Pediatrics in Mokena. He is board certified in both internal and pediatrics. One of his nurses is a lacation consultant. I really haven't had issues, but he has always been supportive of breastfeednig.
