Seeking Feedback on Gyms/fitness Centers

Money is supertight as it is for so many right now but I definitely need to get pro-active about my health. I need to lose quite a bit of weight and want to do so in a clean, healthy, supportive, and reasonably priced environment preferably near west side of Sterling Heights or surrounding area. Any feedback you may have to offer on possible gyms or fitness centers would be warmly welcomed. Thank you.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your suggestions. Some of them sound promising. I just wanted to share that I have been eating much better and watching my calorie count using an online free tool called "my calorie counter" on the Everyday Health website. It also helps me monitor water intake and other things. I do have the Leslie Sansone Walk Away the Pounds videos at home and have used those in the past as well as a few other workout videos. The reason I am not currently using them and/or doing the daily walking suggested by some is due to a current foot problem. At the recommendation of my doctor I need to be doing non-weight bearing exercises for awhile. In other words, I need to do things not requiring me to be standing or putting all of my weight on my foot (hence the interest in other types of weight machines, stationary or recumbent bikes, maybe swimming, etc.). I appreciate all of the input and am quickly coming to look forward to checking Mamasource discussions whenever I can because the suggestions and info shared is so helpful :-)

I work out at home. I have less invested in a wide array of workout DVD's than I would have spent over three months at a gym. I do Billy Blanks Tae Bo and Pilates. I also want to be a positive role model for my daughter, her seeing me take the time to work out really does show her that I am taking my health seriously!

Good luck!

I was a member of Lifetime for four years until it got way too pricey and I hated going..too many showoffs and some of the equipment was broken and stayed that way for years (literally).

My husband started going to Planet Fitness and then he signed me up. It took me several months to actually get there (I am not much of a gym person) but I've been going religiously ever since.

I love it there and am very happy. I find the $10/month a steal, especially compared to what we were paying. And they have a free pizza night once a month which I find hysterical. If you have one near you, I would check it out.

Good luck no matter what you decide.

I have to commend you on wanting to be healthy and a good role model for your children. Now that the weather is getting warmer, you might just want to check-out your local parks. Walking is a great form of exercise, depending on how old your boys are they could either ride along in a stroller or on bikes. Lifetime Fitness is a great family gym, they offer a lot, but it costs > $100/month for a family membership. Another idea, Red Lotus Yoga in Rochester (Rochester Rd and M-59) offers a donation only class twice weekly (Tues/Thurs at 4:15), so you pay what you can afford for relaxation, strength and bliss (redlotusyoga.com). Yoga works wonders for improved overall health!

Why don't you find a good walk pattern and just watch what you eat. If you watch what you eat eat alot of fruits and veggies and alot of water and walk 4 miles a day you will start to loose. Drink 8 oz glass of water before you eat that way you feel full and don't eat as much.

I have an AWESOME idea and it will only cost you a one time fee. Go out and buy the Leslie Sansone Walk workout videos. She has a 1 mile 3 mile and 5 mile videos that I know of. But let me tell you they ROCK!!!! Even the 1 mile is only like 10 mins. and has worked perfectly for me I am a mother of two. I have a membership to Fitness USA but can never find the time to get out there to the gym. So I really really like these videos and so does a lot of the other woman in my family. So sorry I don't have a recommendation for a gym but this seriously works. Good luck...

Check out Planet Fitness. Very reasonable in price and has all the equipment you will ever need. Because it's so inexpensive, there are no aerobic classes, etc....so if that's what you're looking for...then this would not be the place.

A., I would have to recommend Xtreme Fitness for you. They have three locations-one at 14 1/2 and Van Dyke, Hall Rd. and I-94, and 27 Mile and Vandyke. All three of the locations are for use when you sign up. I like the Hall Rd. gym because there is a great family atmosphere there. All three gyms have daycare for a cheap price. Also at the Hall Rd. one there is a trainer that is certified with nutrition that can help you set up a program based on your needs. All three locations are great and have great hours. Give them a call. I go to the Hall Rd one and that phone number is ###-###-####. Oh and at the Hall rd. and 27 mile location they have aerobic classes! Good luck!

Perhaps the YMCA? There is a new place called Super 8 or something like that too that sounds good.. you can go anytime, but it's not that pricey.

Hi A.. A friend of mine told me about Planet Fitness, they have several locations. It's $10/month. They have state of the art equipment, I think the treadmills & elipticals are equipped with headphones so you can hook up the audio to one of the many TV's. And they have circuit training (the 30 minute workout, 1 minute on each machine). I would love to join but they don't have any locations by me. Also, I have a membership to Fitness USA and I think their equipment is outdated, although they may have a better one in your area.

You may want to look to see if there is a Jazzercise class in your area. I joined Jazzercise about 4 months ago and love it. Well priced, and a very comfortable atmosphere. Plus, our facility also has childcare. Its not nearly as overwhelming as a gym can be either. Good luck with everything. Check the jazzercise website and it will allow you to search for classes in your area.
