Seeking Feedback from Other Women Who Have Had Their Tubes Tied

I had my tubes tied after my daughter was born 4 years ago. I had to have a scheduled c-section, so it just seemed like the best time to take care of it because we knew that we did not want any more kids. My question is this...has anyone either had or heard of problems with ongoing (I'm talking like 3 weeks) periods after a tubal? Usually part way through I'll stop bleeding for a day or two, then it starts all over again. I did not have this problem before having kids. I have heard of a couple other women with this same problem, but I didn't know if it was just a coincidence. Any advice or reassurance would be appreciated because this is getting old! :)
Thank you in advance!
W.

When I had my tubes tied it meant not taking B/C anymore which changed my hormone levels. I bled all the time and went thru menopause symptoms. You will need to consider treatments that can include cauterizing the inside of the uterus, hysterectomy and other things available now. One thing I learned is to really stand up for myself getting what I wanted. I had to go thru two D+Cs and tons of hormones but they have better treatment now. Take iron, you'll need it.

Hi W.,

I am so glad you asked about this. YES! I had my tubes tide in May 2006 after my second c-section. I immediately had problems. Pain or pressure in both sides, painful Ovulation and on my ass periods that would last nine days and were very heavy. They even got closer and closer together. All my doctor wanted to do was put me on the pill. I was a mess. No libido too and I had heavy urine like fluid come out of me during ovulation. I got really depressed and had a feeling that it had something to do with having my tubes tied. It was continually ignored by my doctor. Finally I did my own research online for long term side effects after Tubal Ligation. What do you know there were all of my symptoms plus some. It is called Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome. Doctors know about it but most will deny it. They are afraid of lawsuit and there are so many different scientific studies out there the medical community is just ignoring it. It is all about a pay check and population control to them. There is finally information about it on the internet so hopefully doctors will change their literature and mention the long term side effects of tubal ligation.

The only way to restore your body back to normal is to have a Tubal Reversal. Something I also had not clue you can due since all the literature says that it is a non reversible procedure. I found a wonderful doctor here in LA that also teaches reversals at UCLA. I had my reversal on February 29th. I have been through two full cycles and I am back to normal. It is shocking and amazing that we are not informed that a tubal ligation will cut off %50 to %100 of our blood flow to our ovaries. My reversal doctors are going to do a case study on me.

Well i can go on and on for hours about this. Please feel free to e-mail me and I can give you more information about PTLS and Tubal Reversal.

Take care,
D.

PS: I was also tested for polyps, cyst and STD's. Nothing but PTLS.

I too had mine tied a little over 4 years ago. I had similar problems to you and found information on that post tubal syndrome, but wasn't financially in a position to reverse as suggested. However, my difficulties subsided after about 2-3 years and now I have 3 days of heavey bleeding and up to a week of light, cramps at the begining and during ovulation, but the most brutal part has gone away. I don't think this is as uncommon as they would have us believe, but for me it was worth the pain/wait as future pregnancies could be life-threatening for me and the baby.

I had mine done 8 years ago during my second C-Section. I haven't had any problems. Check with your OB/GYN. He/She is the only one that can let you know for sure if everything is ok.
Good Luck.

Having to put up with this for the last four yrs, Girl you need to get to the doctors demand some tests, this is not normal , if you did not have this before your tubes were tied now you do, I had my tubes tied 17 yrs ago, this did not happen to me, although we all are different, I say get to the doctors, demand some tests, or help. How aweful... its bad enough for one week a month but for three, OMG poor women.

Good Luck

After my tubal ligation I started having cramps, which I never had previously to the operation. It used to last one day and then as I grew older changed to two days. I had my tubal ligation a year later after my 3rd child was born. He is now 26 years old. Changes seem to be common, but the knowledge of enjoying sex without having another accidental pregnancy was worth it all.

Hi W.,

I had my tubes tide when my daughter was born almost 4 years ago and I did notice that after I did have some spotting between periods after my period returned. For a while there, I assumed that it was a result of the c-section or my tubes being tide but when I finally got around to seeing my OB/Gyn and mentioned it to him, he sent me in for a pelvic ultrasound and that's how we ended up finding out that I had some fibroids on my uterus. They're not big enough to justify surgery at this time but he did mention that if I start passing clots, I should call him to schedule another appointment to have it checked out.

From the sound of it, it seems like you are having actually periods in between your periods so I'm not sure if your situation and my situation are the same -- possibly you have a hormone imbalance issue or something else -- but I just wanted to let you know about my experience just in case it may help. If I were you, I would schedule a doctor appointment to get it checked out.

Good luck,

L.

I had my tubal back in November and my periods have resumed back to "normal" after having crazy periods for years (on the pill). Although, my cramping has also resumed back to what it used to be before I was on the pill. I haven't had any other "period" problems. Before having the tubal, I asked my ob/gyn if I might have problems and he said that my period wouldn't be effected at all. Since, a tubal is quite simply just a cauterization of your fallopian tubes and doesn't change your hormones or anything else related to your periods, your issue is most likely hormonal issues due to aging. Check with your doctor if there is anything that can be done to help alleviate your symptoms. Most women don't have to suffer these days. Good luck!

Hi W.,
Four years is a long time for excessive bleeding. You could possibly have fibroids or cysts which cause excessive bleeding. I had my tubes tied fourteen years ago and never had any problems, however, in January I had to have a hysterectomy due to an over sized fibroid growing in my uterus. That salad plate size fibroid caused me to have menstrual cycles that lasted seven to ten days with heavy bleeding. My advice would be to have yourself checked out soon and see if that might be the cause.
Best of luck,
T. :)

I had my tubes tied and after that I had the heaviest periods of my life. Never 3 weeks but much longer and heavier than before the Tubal-ligation.
You should see you OB-GYN though. I am not an expert

Hi there. I had my tubes tied about 8 or 9 yrs ago. I don't have the problem you are talking about. Have you asked your doctor? Everyone is different and my periods did change after my babies, they became more regular. Don't know if that helped or not.

Never heard of this but I had my tubes tied 4 years ago after my 3rd child. I have very heavy periods where I wear a Maxi plus a super tampon and have to change it every 1-2 hours on the 2nd day of my period by day 4 no sign of a period, then on the 5th day, I have spotting for about 1-2 weeks. The more active I am the less spotting occurs. I didn't think this was due to my tubal...Guess I'll ask my Dr. about it.

I haven't heard of your issue, but I have heard of women who get pregnant after the 5 year mark. You have to have your tubes checked yearly after that to make sure nothing has come loose. It IS possible to still get pregnant so make sure you check. Your doctor will probably tell you the chances are slim, but demand that you be checked.

Hi W.
it is definitely no fun to have prolonged menses for any women.I had my tubal ligation 15 years ago and never had any problem but it is almost unlikely that BTL will effect woman's period because your fallopian tubes don't have any part in your periods however your uterus/ovarries/hormones and the way they work play a big part.there are many reasons for irregular/prolonged/heavy menses.please go and see your OB/GYN for evaluation and I am sure he or she will be able to help you.good luck.

I know this is an old post, but I'm doing a little research myself. I am 30 yrs old with 3 kids ages 11, 3 and 1. I had filshie clips placed on my tubes in april of 2009. Sept. 10, 2010 I had them removed because they caused me pain all the time. I didn't find out until my 2 week post op appt that when the Dr. removed the clips he cauterized my tubes in 3 places on each side. Since the surgery in Sept. my health has gradually declined. I have cysts on both ovaries. (I've NEVER had a problem with painful cysts in my life). I'm in pain every day, I am sick to my stomach all the time, so tired, losing my hair, dropping weight with no effort, (down to 108 lbs at 5'3). my eyes are bloodshot, my body aches, my periods are horrendous, my breasts hurt and my milk ducts will randomly pop up, (not nursing), I have swollen lymph nodes in my arm pits, and the list goes on and on...oh I haven't been able to have sex with my husband in 2 mos because it is extremely painful. I went to the E.R. a couple weeks ago and had a C.T. scan which showed the 2 cysts. They are both only 2 cm. I don't understand how I can feel this bad from something so small. The E.R. doc said, "maybe you have a touch of the flu." I left there in tears. I have an appointment tomorrow with a reproductive endocrinologist so I am hoping to get some answers. please let me know if you've found any answers!

It has been quite a while since you told about your problem and I am wondering if you ever found an answer you coudl live with. I had my tubes tied after my 5th pregnancy and my 6th child. Seeing as it was a c-section I too thought that it woudl be wise to take care it all at one time. It has been a little over a year and I am having periods like I have never in my entire life experienced before. Painful cramping, very heavy flow for at least 4 days...and sometimes like you it will all of a sudden stop and then I will be spotty or start all over again for at least another 3 or more days. Would love to hear from you.
