My family and I moved to the Chatt area a few years ago but are still looking for a church for the whole family. My children are 5 and 3 and it is important that the church have a strong children's program with opportunity for us to know the kids and parents. However, we still want strong christian values and fellowship/activities for my husband and me. With both of us new to the area, I am hoping church helps us settle a bit more into the area.Does anyone know of a starting place?

What can I do next?

The church I attend has a wonderful children's program where they teach about Christ and good values. There is always a strong network of families in similiar stages of life as you and a support system, great friends, and not to mention the truthfulness of the gospel. I go to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and there is one where you live too. Try going to LDS.org and go the the 'about the church' tab at the top. It allows you to find a meetinghouse in your area. I can gaurantee you would be happy here!

First, you need to decide what size church you would feel the most comfortable attending--small, medium, large or mega large. Then you have to decide what extra things are important to you--Do you want a strong children's ministry or a strong youth ministry, etc.

Look around at the churches in your neighborhood. Pick about 4-5 churches that are in close promixity to your home. Some of them may have a website to research. Call the church secretary on a weekday morning and find out the times for Sunday school and worship services. If they do not have a church secretary they will often have an answering machine or voice mail that will give you the times for Sunday school and workship services.

Go visit a different church every week for 4-5 weeks. Sit down as a family and have a family discussion about which 2-3 churches you felt the most comfortable attending.

Spend about a month going to each of the 2-3 churches you liked the best. Get involved, attend pot luck dinners, vacation bible school, etc. Make an appointment to talk to the pastor or priest. Really try out a couple of the churches. At the end of the 2 or 3 months have another family discussion. You will know which church you feel the most "at home" attending and you will have your answer.

One last piece of advice. Listen closely to your children on this one. Sometimes kids pick up on things that adults don't even notice. Happy hunting for your new church family!

I guess it would depend on your religion? But, we just moved to springfield,tn. I was lucky, found one about 1/2 block away. I would go on line and look under"chattanooga churches". Then start elimination process to the ones that are not close to your area. If you want, call the church and ask questions. Most of the churches now a days have emails for contact info. Pray about it, ask neighbors, ask at local stores. Drive around your location and write down names and address of the churches. Believe me there will be alot of them. If they seem interesting to you.

Hi L.,
It seems lots of others have answered your request but I feel I must put in one more. The Church of JESUS CHRIST Of Latter-day Saints is a GREAT choice. The primary (childrens) program is fantastic. Children learn about the Bible, Jesus, Heavenly Father and more. Plus they have a very good time. Look in the phone book and call the missionaries, they will come to you and help you find the building and everything. You and your husband will benefit so much with the fellowship of other Christians. The church is extremely family oriented. You will find it is like going home. You can leave your money at home no offering is collected and the dress is regular Sunday clothes.
Blessing on you and your family,
M.

Hi. You didn't mention if you belong to a specific denomination, but we love our church, MorningStar Presbyterian Church. It's in Matthews, which is East/SE Charlotte. The members are all very friendly, the pastor is great, and the music program is wonderful. We are a very open & accepting church. They do childrens church, there's a good preschool, sunday school classes, VBS in the summer and childrens choir during the holidays. We also do outreach ministry, and there's fun stuff like the youth group, womens group, mens group, young adult group, Wednesday night dinners, even a Madrigal Dinner being planned for Valentine's weekend. Here's the website if you'd like to check it out further. Good luck finding a new church family. :-)

Hi L.

We moved to Chatt a little over a year ago. We tried several churches and settled on Christ United Methodist Church in East Brainerd. I think Ginny emailed you about it as well! My husband and I seem to think outside of the box and, therefore, didn't feel comfortable in many of the churches we tried. We felt right at home at Christ Church and our children love it! Mark is a wonderful pastor and I never feel like I am being "judged" at this church. Hope you find a home for you and your family!

We would love to have you at Christ United Methodist on East Brainerd Road! There are tons of kids activities, and the service schedules are really flexible too. We've found the 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM services to be convenient around naptimes (there's also an 11:00 service, but we're all tired by then!). Our pastor is a down-to-earth, "regular" guy--quite refreshing. Good luck finding a church, I know it's a tough search. But, we've been happy at Christ Church, so we'd love to share it with you!
