Seeking Experience with Child Having Teeth Removed

My son is 8 years old. He or should I say I had eaten alot of fruit gushers and fruit roll ups in the past. I have not given him either for atleast 2 years now. The problem is they candy caused alot a cavities. Please don't let your children eat the gushers. My son now has 3 deep cavaties that the dentist wants to remove all three of them instead of caping them off. My son does have 1 caped off now. They also suggest he has a retainer to help with the spacing and new teeth growing straight. The question I have is that they want to do all this work in 1 visti. I am wondering if anyone deault with this and how they child made out with the pain. I am just concerned that this is to much to do all at once, but it is also good to do all at once so my son doesn't have to be troubled to go back for more dental work. Let me know. Thanks

The best advice I have ever been given with this was to give my daughter benadryl just about 30 mins prior to the appt time. It calmed her a bit & caused her to be a little drowsy so she wasn't as bad as she could've been. One thing that we also did was iced the area & I would just keep giving her the motrin every 6 hrs so it would keep from the pain flaring up. Good luck!

My daughter who is 5 had 6 teeth removed at once, but they were in the front. She had to go and have it done in the hospital because she needed to be sedated because she has very high anxiety when it comes to the dentist. She did well with the pain, popsicles and tylenol helped greatly. If the teeth are molars that are coming out that may make a difference for chewing and pain. I also had to give her soft foods for a couple days:pudding, jello, soup, yogurt, find what your say likes and wouldn't mind eating for a couple days. You might be able to try ambesol on the gums to help with pain too. I hope this helps you.

Definitely get a second opinion. never hurts and then you will feel better about getting this done.

My son, now 15, has had several teeth removed, a space maintainer, and is in the last few months of braces. Has been with this dental center since he was 3.

Long story short, get a second opinion, get all the work done that you can while you can, no sipping from straws after the work is done and keep the foods as soft as possible for a few days. Anbesol or Orajel with Tylenol or Motrin are your friend.

Hope this helps.

I have 4 children and haven't experienced that yet but I have dealt with a lot of cavities being filled. If it was me I would just let the dentist do it all in 1 visit and tell the dentist to make sure he numbs your son up real good so that he feels minimal activity. Tell your son that this is what happens when you eat a lot of candy and hopefully this will deter him from eating so much candy. My children cringe when its time to go to the dentist and I always give them the speech. They always promise to do better but when the initial fear wares off they go back to their old habits. Kids will be kids. Since this is a "big" deal hopefully this will really scare him into not going back to his old habits.Although we try to teach them good habits remember we don't know what they eat when their in school. Good LUck and just talk him thru it..prepare him, he'll be okay.

Sorry that your son needs to have these extractions. I don't think it would be more beneficial for him to have the anesthesia and recovery and pain 3 times, get them all done at once. As for the retainer, that's a matter for an orthodontist, I would consult one or two.
Good luck

The questions you are asking can not really be addressed fully without knowing how bad the condition of the teeth, whether they could be saved by doing pulpotomies and stainlless steel crowns or they feel the investment doesn't make sense, because the teeth won't be exfolliating for awhile. Is your son having this treatment performed only with local anesthetic, or nitrous oxide sedation? My advise is to discuss this again with the treating office, before you do anything. You should feel comfortable with their advice or seek another professional opinion. There are many offices that offer a complimentary second opinion.

Do it all at once. If you do, say half, and he
experiences pain and discomfot, trying to get him
back could be a problem. Good luck.
