Seeking Dance Lessons to Get in Shape

I just had a baby and I'm looking for dance lessons to get back in shape. If anyone knows of a studio in North Dallas that offers adult classes (ballet, modern, jazz) 2-3 times per week at a reasonable rate please let me know. I have training in all these and have been dancing for a local theatre for the last four years. However, I have not taken lessons at a dance studio during that time, so I don't know what is out there. I am looking to strengthen my muscles as well as brush up on my technique (while having fun and loosing my baby weight).

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for your help! One of my friends belongs to a dance troupe and is willing to let me join their training sessions for free! I'm trying it out tomorrow. However, I will keep your suggestions in mind for the summer. Thanks!

It is difficult to find good adult classes, especially at the average kid-oriented studio. Check out MoveStudio at Preston and Campbell roads, www.movestudio.com. They have yoga, pilates, core toning, hip-hop, cardio latin, Nia, bellydance, jazz, etc. Lots of great classes, beautiful studio, and ADULT (no pictures of kittens and pointe shoes on the walls). Ecstatic dance is also great--it is a free dance improv session. You can register for a series class (like beginning yoga for 6 weeks) or go to the numerous drop-in classes by purchasing a class pass. The website will have the current class schedule, descriptions of classes, bios of the teachers, and different options for payments.

Hey I.!

As a former professional myself (because of a little one I also have stopped 4 years) I have started looking for something as well. Something that I have found that TOTALLY complements what you are looking for is Yoga! It strengthens, stretches, is a stress reliever and can help you lose the weight! There is a great place I found in Coppell called Surya Center for Yoga right at the intersection of Beltline and Denton Tap (848 S. Denton Tap, #250 in Coppell). They have a great promo for 10 days of unlimited yoga for $10! Check them out! www.SuryaCenterYoga.com

I have no suggestions for you but am going to follow this as I have been looking for classes for my teen - not the dance to the recital goal thing but true dance classes as I used to take in college for the training dancer....

I recently joined the Town North YMCA (Northaven and Midway.) They have two great classes that are dance oriented - Zumba and Hip Hop Moves. Zumba is based on Latin dance with hip hop mixed in. These may not be what you are looking for, but there are a lot of us in there who were dancers in our previous lives. :) It is a lot of fun and we are sweating when its over. My daughter is 9 months old and I lost 10 pounds over 6 weeks because of the Zumba class (and breast feeding - LOL)
You could try them out in one day because they are both held on Saturday back to back. Zumba is at 9am and Hip Hop is at 10am. I am pretty sure the Y allows a visitors pass to try it out. Great facilities and child care.

BTW - I recently heard great things about the Nia classes that someone else mentioned.

I have always enjoyed Dallas Community College (Richland) and Collin County Community College. They have Excellent teachers! You may not be looking for the "college" atmosphere, however, please check it out. I have always met inspiring professors and other students who have a WIDE variety of contacts and knowledge of their field. Good Luck!

Jazzercise! Go to their website and search for classes in your area. I know the Walnut Hill Rec Center has classes. It's a great workout! I did it for 5 months last year and got into the best shape of my life. I'd still be doing it now if the location near me hadn't ended the only class time that was convenient for me.

Also, their used to be a dance studio at March Lane and Forest, but I don't know if it's still there (I think it was JTM Studio). I took Irish Dance lessons there in the late 90's, but they offered lots of other classes too.
