I recently had a baby. My scalp has been very dry. It has formed dry patches, scales, and redness. I have been treating it with dandruff shampoos. I would like advice on an oil to use on my scalp after I wash my hair that will not weigh my hair down and will keep my scalp moisturized.

What can I do next?

I'm not African American either, however, I have a very itchy scalp also. I use scalpex I think is the name of it. You can buy it in the shampoo section (I bought mine at CVS and bought the CVS brand). You put it directly on the spot that itches. It tingles but it has helped a lot and had no effect on my hair.

I also had hair and scalp issues during my pregnancies & after the births of both of my children now ages 6 (boy) and 3 (girl). You may want to go to carolsdaughter.com. It is a company geared specifically for African Americans. They have a great line of hair care products. I even use the products on my children. You also have to give your body time to adjust from the hormonal surge it has just encountered. My hair was back to "normal" after about 6 or 7 months after giving birth both times.

Welcome to motherhood, and your body changing all over again. My scalp was so dry after I had my son. I always thought that dandruff shampoos made it worse. I liked to use "Tame your Mane" leave in conditioner. Seemed to help.

If you are able to locate it. Mane and Tail is very good, usually found in stores like Roses, Family Dollar, etc. However, I know Roses has it because unfortunately, I do not believe NC has Super 10 stores. If all else fails, consult your stylist. Do not have one, let me know.

I would try Doo Gro's Scalp Oil. It's not greasy and doesn't weigh your hair down.

Olive oil, or tea tree oil, are both great, I need moisture in my hair but grease is too heavy, I use the olive oil and it does wonders for my hair the scalp formula(hard like grease not as heavy for the scalp) and the oil sheen for everyday shine an moisture without weighing my hair down and/or dulling it. Hope this helps, also ther is the sulfur 7 that you might consider using to treat the dry spot specifically and maybe not the entire head. Hope this is helpful.

just so you know, i'm not african american, but i'm a hairdresser and have dealt with all types of hair. stop using the dandruff shampoo, it will only make it worse. it sounds like you have psoriasis or dermatitis on your scalp. try using nutragena t-gel shampoo...it has coal tar in it and should help clear up the scaley patches. it can be drying to the hair, so be sure to use a thick moisturizing conditioner after wards. also tea tree oil would be good to use. it has a cooling effect but also has natural antiseptic qualities that can soothe and heal. it may take a couple of weeksto see any results. if that doesn't help, you may need to a doctor...soemtimes excessive dryness can be a sign of thyroid problems, and woman who have just had babies can be prone to it.

I just wanted to second the recommendation to use a shampoo with tea tree oil in it. I work with a health & wellness company that has one with the highest percentage of tea tree oil in it on the market. Contact me directly if you want more info. and good luck! Like some other moms have said, your body does change a lot during and after pregnancy.

It sounds like you are talking about your scalp and not your daughter's. Well I had the exact same problem and nothing over the counter worked, so I ended up going to a dermatologist and she diagnosed it as seborrhea (sp?) and prescribed a shampoo (Colobex) and and scalp oil (floiricinide sp?) and it worked instantly.

You might want to wash your hair in Netrogena (sp) T-gel or T-Sal shampoo. Wash and leave on the scalp for a few minutes. You might have seborrhic dermatitis. My daughter has it on her scalp and the Ped prescribed some liquid that I have to put on her scalp. But being that we are adults we can probably use something more stronger. Check out a dermatologist.

I am not African-American but my daughter (which is Caucasian) has had sever dandruff for years.
The BEST thing that we have found is a shampoo that has Tea Tree Oil in it.
Tea Tree Oil comes primarily from Australia. It is a natural way to get dandruff under control.
When you 1st start using it (for the 1st couple of weeks); you may think that it is getting worse because the shampoo will break all of the dandruff up off of your head & it will start flaking away. - So you will see it in your hair.
But, it will eventually clear it all away. It is the best think that we have found & we have tried A LOT of treatments.

I hate that itchy feeling, and the red spots hurt!
Your doctor can give you a prescription for Nizoral 2% (It's kind of pricy, about $35 a bottle, but if you have prescription coverage, it should cover it.) You leave it on for five minutes and then wash it out. I used that once a week for a couple of months, and then use over the counter Nizoral in between, once a week also. It deals with the fungus (I think that's what it was, like sebbhorea). I shampoo twice every time I wash my hair. I use the Nizoral OVTC (1%) when I shampoo (even now) for one shampoo, and a good shampoo (non drying, high protein for strength) for the second. I use a leave in conditioner.

I have become a big fan of Olive oil. The perms are great and the conditioning creams and sheen sprays are great. The Olive oil line is a bit pricey but I have been getting excellent results.

My sister also likes carrot oil..
hope it helps.

Hi I am a black mom with DRY scalp and genetics gave it too my children. What I have found that works best for us is Pantene anti dandruff shampoo and conditioner for women of color; I also use DooGro hot oil treatment and on my boys I use the DooGro hair oil; and me and my girls use B&B Oil Moisturizer instead of hair grease stuff. My girls and I wear our hair wrapped and this works well to keep the body and oil in our hair. And sometimes i just use the hot oil at room temp on our scalp also when it gets dry. I also use the Tea Oil products but they made my hair seem heavy. I have thick hair already and didn't like the way it weighed it down. Hope this helps.

You may want to ceck with your peditrician because it sounds like your daughter has ezema. If that is the case there is some over the couter baby ezema scalp mositurizer. You can find it in any baby section and at any pharmacy. I hope this helps.
