Seeking Alternative Health Care Provider for 5 Year Old.

My 5 year old son has been sick all winter! Every other week since mid-october he comes down with a fever, sore throat with a combo of ear infection, sinus congestion and cough. Not always the same symptoms other than fever and sore throat. He has taken 3 rounds of antibiotics, which his symptoms initially improve but days after he finishes his 10 day course, he inevitably comes down with another fever/sore throat. In addition to antibiotics I have been treating him at home with Acidopholus, Zinc. echinacea, vita C, and garlic oil in ears. I even took him to get adjusted by a chiropractor to help clear his ears. I need to find an alternative practitioner who works with children to help build his immune system as clearly not having luck with antibiotics and conventional treatments.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your info, its been really helpful! Brought my son in to the Dr. today and turns out he has Strep and this may all be exacerbated by chronic sinusitis. We did get a humidifier today so hopefully that will help. We will also continue to explore alternative healing resources. Thanks again!

Sounds like my daughter....until I bought a humidifier and made her obsessed with hand washing. That was how my daughter was birth-5 years old.... We lived at the doctor. My daughter is 6 this year and hasn't been sick ONCE which is a miracle. I think our house was so dry the past years it created alot of sinus, congestion junk etc.. Since I bought 2 humidifiers we are both alot healthier in that aspect my daughter is also obsessed with germs, washing hands, and has hand sanitizer in her desk at school. We've either just been lucky this year or the little things I'm doing are actually helping.

Doesn't your chiropractor deal in stuff like that? It sounds like you have already been doing some of the things that they would have suggested. We go to Hopkins Health and Wellness Center.

Also, have you considered a flu shot in the fall? My kids did not get one, but I did, and they have been much more ill than I have, so I am considering it for next year.

I would stick with the Chiropractor, it takes more than just one treatment to get the body back to optimum performance. If you don't feel comfortable with the chiropractor you saw you can always look for one in your area that specializes in pediatrics at www.icpa4kids.org. I would also suggest seeing a homeopath.

My husband is a naturopath/chiropractor that uses kinesiology in his practice. He'll be able to help you build your child's immune system. Most of the time, children that have re-occuring illnesses are reacting to something their eating. His office is in Bloomington. His web-page is www.DrElijah.com

Hi J.,
I can appreciate your situation. I am also a single mom with a 10 year old who also tends to get sick frequently. I am very familiar with the feelings of worry, exhaustion and frustration that go along with caring for a sick child by yourself. It will get better! There are things you can do and you are on the right track in looking for a good natural health care provider in addition to your doctor. You may want to try Dr. Greg Wastl in Eagan who is an alternative and complimentary health care provider. He does a lot with eliminating yeast, fungus and heavy metals which is believed to be a huge contributor to illness. His treatment is pretty strict (it follows an elimination diet of all foods that encourage the growth of fungus and yeast) and may not be something a child can follow 100% but maybe it would be helpful to learn about some things that you can do to help improve his condition. He has a website you may want to check out...www.gregwastl.org. There are many other supplements that can help your son in addition to the remedies you mentioned above but he should be tested to make sure that they would work for him. Hope this helps a little. Feel free to let me know how things are going for you. Good luck!

I think you are doing great with the natural remedies but another thought is to continue getting him adjusted by someone that works on children until hopeful the problem is resolved. I stongly believe in holistic methods if at all possible. Another thought, is does he have issues with tonsils, there must be some inderlying issue of why he is always coming down with something and needs an antibotic. I went through something similiar as this with my 1 1/2 year old daughter now 2 1/2 and after trying all the homeopathic ways ended up she needed to get tubes in her ears and she has been sick free since then. Good luck.
