Seeking Advice on Splitting Skin

Dear Moms,

I never had this problem until I had my son a year and a half ago. When the weather turns cold, the skin on my fingertips splits in deep cuts running from the nail back into the pad of the finger. The cuts bleed and are extremely painful. I reapply lotion all day long. It doesn't make a darned bit of difference. I'm inclined to think it must have something to do with hormones, since this never happened to me before the baby, and now this winter I'm pregnant again. Everyone I've talked to about it so far just says, "Use hand lotion." That advice hasn't proven very helpful. Have any of you had this problem and found something that actually WORKS?

Many Thanks.

I had (have) this problem after my twins were born. They are now 3 1/2 yrs old. I saw a dermatologist who diagnosed excema. He prescribed a cortisone cream but advised to avoid hand washing - a difficult task as I am a dental hygienist. He said that it is a common problem with new mothers. If you can, see a dermatologist. good luck

try hydrocortisone creme....maximum strength....use it 2-3 times a day....at bed rub in the creme and put on vinyl gloves and go to sleep..do this every night..if vinyl is too uncomfortable get white cotton gloves and do it....start using vinyl gloves for all cleaning purposes...also for my severe case the green aloe dial liquid soad is all the softsoap i use and white dial or white dove only for showering....and don't forget to wear gloves in the winter....

this should bring you some relief...A.

I had the same sort of cracks and cuts on the palm of my hand for three months and it turned out to be an allergy to detergents. You'll need to go to a dermatologist who will likely prescribe a steroid cream. My ob-gyn assured me that they're safe to use during pregancy. No cosmetic or over-the-counter lotion will help. Believe me, I tried everything -- slathering Vaseline on my hands and wearing socks over them at night, putting on lotion after coming in contact with water, etc. Nothing worked! After I started using the medication, my hands improved within a day, although it will be about a month before the skin heals completely. Also, use a neutral soap (the dermatologist can recommend one) and avoid coming in contact with dishwashing liquid and other cleansers. Wear two sets of gloves -- cotton gloves under vinyl -- for doing housework. Good luck!

Hi Shoshana,
Sorry to hear about your problem with dry skin. I can highly recommend a skin care lotion that has been clinically approved to be the best and really works. However, it's not available in retail stores, only from the manufacturer directly. You can buy this lotion at wholesale.
If you are interested in me sharing it with you email me at: ____@____.com or call me at: ###-###-####
I live in Manhattan.

Hi Shoshana, This used to happen to me every winter. My youngest son is 25 so I'm not sure it is hormone related. I found that I would mix zinc oxide and some vaseline and rub it into my fingertips. It does not heal overnight and yes it is very painful. Be sure to wear good warm gloves and cover you fingers with vaseline whenever you go out. My husband had the same problem when he worked for UPS. He said the cardboard boxes dried his hands out. For us ladies it is washing dishes or cleaning with harsh chemicals. I hope this helps. Use Bag Balm or try using the Lansinoh breast cream. Both will help soothe cracked skin. You can also try Aquaphor. If it is split and bleeding you need to use something like Neosporin to keep it from getting infected too.

hi,

this sometimes happens to me. I use antibiotic cream and put a bandaid on my fingers, seems to help.

You certainly can have your thyroid function checked. It sometimes kicks out in childbirth, although I can't say I've heard this complaint often. Usually people complain of dry skin and nails and hair loss. Avon has an amazing hand cream that is really thick like paste called Moisture Therapy that I've seen my mother and mother-in-law use on cracked fingertips similar to what you describe. Have you tried vaseline? I also think those thin white cotton gloves keep the grease in overnight. Good luck!

I've found Melaleuca's Renew lotion works wonders on my dry skin. I keep a bottle in the bathroom, on my dresser, and near the kitchen sink. After your hands heal, continue to moisturize throughout the winter.

Use gloves when washing dishes, and warm gloves when you're outside.

Good luck!

Hi. First, congratulations and I hope that you've alreadys consulted with your doctor because you think it's due to pregnancy hormones. I don't know if it's the same thing, but I have mild dermititis on my hands and feet that surfaces during the winter. This leaves me with dry knuckles which crack, split and sometimes bleed. I went to a dermatologist and was told to use Eucerin. So, during the day I use lotion that is non-scented, and mild; like baby lotion. The scents in lotion means that is has alcohol and this burns your hands more. If it's really bad, then at night I use Eucerin and put on white cotton gloves. This helps my hands to become soft again. Best of luck and Happy Holidays!!
