Seeking Advice on Getting Rid of Tangles in 15-Month-old's Hair Naturally

Hi mamas, My fifteen month old has recently started to get tangles/matting in back of her hair each morning and after her nap. I think the cold weather/dry heat is to blame but I'm not sure how to prevent or treat the tangles other than brushing them out (ouch). Her hair is very fine and silky, like mine. In my case, hair products tend to weigh my hair down or make it seem greasy. So I'm looking for something that won't mat her hair or make it greasy. If it's a product, I'm looking for something fragrance free and hypoallergenic. Or maybe there's something I can add to her diet to moisturize her hair?

What can I do next?

California Baby has a great hair detangling spray. A little spray really helps me get the tangles out of my 16 months old hair and it doesn't seem to make her hair too greasy. I only wash it once a week.

my daughters both have superfine soft hair too! in my case my oldest one wouldn't let me TOUCH it with the tangles in it. so we made a trip to KidzCutz and off it went. she's got the cutest little haircut now. she says she looks like "suri cruse" LOL> cutting hair may not be an option for you, but it saved us both from unnecessary stress.

after her bath, spray a little of the johnson and johnson no tangles spray on her hair and brush through it. You can also use the J&J no tangles shampoo. If her hair is long enough, you can try to braid it at night, which helps elleviate knots. Otherwise, just a little spray of the no tangles can go a long way.

Hi D.,
Seems like this is a problem that will last our girls through childhood. It started with my daughter around that age. We did nothing for a long time. Finger combing dry hair helped it from getting too bad. I couldn't imagine using a de-tangler at the time. Not on my little organic baby! But, let me tell you where we are at. My daughter will be 4 in April. She's never had a haircut and has quite a head of hair. We do a gentle brush/smoothing of her dry hair before she takes a shower. When she gets out we comb her hair with a de-tangling comb. That comb really is a blessing and does a lot of the work without tugging. We use California Baby de-tangler spray. It's about $10-12 a bottle and it lasts us more than 6 months. It's organic and natural although scented with lavender. (But not at all overbearing. We tried a different brand (rainbow, maybe?)organic unscented de-tangler and it smells like a urinal!) We then braid her hair. She sleeps with a braid in. Often it is in tack enough that her hair stays in that braid for a day, but sometimes we take it out and have "princess curls". The whole process has softened the ordeal of hair brushing. I have such bad memories of hair brushings as a child. It was torture. I don't want my daughter to dread hair brushing time and our family can't handle the melt-downs that came with them as she got older.

BTW, my mom still blames herself and our traumatic hair brushings for my decision to dread my hair when I was 24. 8 years later, I still have dreadlocks and couldn't care less if my daughter had them, but wouldn't make that choice for her, of course!

Have you thought about braiding it before putting her to bed? I don't know how long her hair is, but if it's long enough to braid, this'll stop the tangles.

Isn't it fun!!!! I had the same problem with my little one who has very curly hair.It got worse the longer her hair grew too. I was told to get Ouidad Products, which are designed specifically for curly hair. They are a little on the pricey side, but they work wonderful. Go to their website, or find a salon that sells this brand. Also, I was told by a professional to use a wide tooth comb, not a brush. This has also helped. When it's soaking wet, I put the conditioner on then use the wide tooth comb to comb out the snarls / mats and it's much easier, no "ouch's". Good luck. S.

My daughter has long, fine super tangely hair and we use a spray bottle with regular hair conditioner (you can choose as natural as you like) squirt some in the bottle and then fill with water. I usually go for the brushing if a cartoon is on or during a"special" treat to eat.

Give her a bath/shower in the morning... or try using conditioner in her hair at night.

I have had to do this to my daughters hair since she was one -- her hair is so thick.

Haven't tried it myself but if your daughter uses a pillow I have heard that satin pillowcases eliminate tangles. good luck
