Seeking Advice on Asthma
My 4 1/2 year old daughter has had Asthma since she was 2. It has become a lot worse as she gets older. Hers is triggered by viruses (colds), since January she hs had a cold once or twice a month back to back. Needles to say she has had a hard time with her asthma. She is on Pulmicort respules as her control medicine and abutreol as her rescue med. My question to all the other mom's of asthma kids is when do I take her to see someone other than her regular peditrician in regards to her Asthma. SHe will get a cold and usually day 3 is when it peaks. She will have coughing spells (2-4 hours non stop)on this day and will often throw up because she is coughing so hard. She becomes very exhausted and will take another day of little or NO activity to get her self back. We have been to ER twice in 4 mos., and had to take her for a scik kid visit on Saturday as well. Do other families experience this? Is the controller medicine suposed to prevent the coughing and wheezing. How do I know if this is the right control medicine, or if it is strong enough? Am I overly concerned, should I look into taking her to nat'l Jewish for an eval? Is she supose to have colds this often? She was a 34 week baby (premie), and asthma is very prevelant in both mine and my husband's families. Any helpful advice is greatly appreciated. Thank You!

I would take her to a Dr who specailizes in treating asthma and allergies as soon as possible. National jewish is one of the best places in the nation for diagnosing and treating children with asthma and allergies. Check out their website at nationaljewish.org
Asthma is a life threatning illness and nothing to mess around with. My son has asthma and we were only able to get the help we really needed by seeing an allergist. We go to Colorado Allergy and Asthma Center ( you can look up the nearest office to where you live) but there are also other specailist who can give your child the help she needs.

My brother had terrible asthma when he was young. He almost died 3 times. My mother temporarily moved my brother and I here from Arkansas so he could go to National Jewish. After attending there for a while, we moved back to Arkansas and with certain treatments, etc., he was able to play football in high school and college which is a HUGE miracle.

If she is having that many problems it is time to see a pulmalogist and get a better control inhaler.
Colorado is know for asthma and the altitude makes breathing difficult. The 2-4 hour coughing is asthma kicking in big time. I would get her evaluated and one the right meds. She sounds like she is in trouble.

It does not sound like the asthma is not under control. We see Dr. Marjeana Krawiec at Nat'l Jewish and love her! I know it can be difficult to get in and am not sure what the proper procedure is for that. We got in as a favor to a friend. I would also check into Children's. I hear it's easier to get in and we have friends who have been very pleased with the help they've gotten over there. Let me know if you need some help. We've been through the waiting lists before for specialists. I hope your daughter can get to feeling better soon.
