Seeking Advice for My Mom

My father passed away a few months ago and my mom found herself in a very difficult situation financially. She has medical conditions that keep her from working and social security isn't nearly enough to cover the cost of the debt on house and car. The lack of insurance and income has put her in a position where she is considering bankruptcy but doesn't even know where to start on that. Unfortunately, with baby number 3 due any day now, we're not able to help much except to offer shelter. Does anyone know if there is some sort of state assistance that addresses financial planning? She doesn't mind starting from scratch, she just needs to figure out how to get out from a mortgage and vehicle payment that she has no hope in keeping up with.

What can I do next?

C.,
First of all let me tell you I am sorry for your loss
and your mothers. I know this is a difficult time for
you both. I lost my dad when I was 15 and my mom was 41.
She never remarried. She is now almost 72 and has had to
file for bankruptcy. She went through a lawyer who gave
her an exceptional deal on the bancruptcy. There is a
way to do a quick sale on the house. Which means that
would get what they could for it. Which may or may not
cover the total amount. You could discuss it with a
realtor. Here is one for you; Judy Berry, email address:
____@____.com with the vehicle she could
do a volunteer surrender, this is where she would go and leave the vehicle in the parking lot of the dealership in which they purchased it. Anyway, my mother could give also give you the name and number of the lawyer she is using.
My mother's name is Susan and her # is ###-###-####.
Hope all goes well for her and you. God bless you!
K.

Have her call Mid-America Regional Council and have her ask for the Area Agency on Aging the number is ###-###-####. They have a lot of information and refurals to other agencys that can help. Have her call that first before she calls anyone else. Another option is the United Way and that number is 211. Hope this helps.
