My one year old has recently for 3 days been running a temperature off and on and now will not go to sleep to save our lifes. He has been a great sleeper throughout his year of life and just wondering if anyone has any suggestions? My guess is that it is teething related and the Tylenol is just helping his pain. He seems to be most uncomfortable when he lays down. Any advice I'd appreciate...
Thank everyone SO much for all the advice! so caring and sweet. We took Elijah to the urgent care last night and he indeed does have an ear infection on the right and a throat infection as well. I feel horrible for him. But they gave him a Zpak in liquid form and ear drops that seemed to help tremendously last night cuz he slept ALL night. Thanks everyone so much for the great comments. Try Hylands teething tablets. They have them at Whole Foods and also Target I beleive. They work really well, if he is teething.
I also have a 13 month old.
If it is congestion and not teething, try a humidifier. I use it
in my daughters' room and it works wonders.

Have you called your pediatrician? A friend of mine who is a Lactation Consultant at Holy Cross in Mission Hills started out as a peds nurse. She told me that teething fevers tend to stay low grade. If it goes over 100 it's a sign of infection and they need to get checked out. Hope this helps!
Could be an ear infection or some other infection? It does not hurt to take him to the pediatrician just to be sure.
It sounds like this might be an ear infection rather than just teething. I would get him in to the doctors or emerge asap.
Have you tried the teething gels. They hate it at first, but once it starts soothing they seem to enjoy it.
If he's teething, try rubbing diluted clove oil on his gums (1 drop essential clove oil to 1 tbs vegetable oil). It numbs the gums, like Ambesol (but is perfectly natural).

There is a cold virus going around. My sitter came to work sick and gave it to my 10 1/2 month old G/G twins. Very irresponsible, when I told her not to come to work if she is sick. Anyway, I am giving my twins Tylenol as well and it seems to help. But one of them woke at 1 AM last night and at 5:45 AM w/ a fever and felt crummy. After the Tylenol, and a little milk, she just wanted to be held. Try just holding your baby before putting him down to sleep until he is drowsy. She fell asleep in my hubby's arms and then we put her back in her crib. This is unusual b/c she sleeps regularly 12-13 hrs straight too.
Your baby's molars might be cutting through the gums? You can try Baby Orajel OTC at CVS drugstore. Most stores carry it. It worked great when my girls had pain w/ teething.
The other problem could be reflux and/or gas. Do you have a swing that you can put him in which elevates his head for sleeping? Then once he falls into a deep sleep, transfer him to his crib. There is also OTC anti-gas drops you can try too at CVS. I would first check w/ your Pediatrician though since the fever has been going on and off x 3 days.

Your poor baby!!!! his gums are probably pulsating more when you lay him down. are you elevating his head at the same time too? try having him suck on large pieces of ice or popsicles. the coolness of the ice will numb the gum and give him some relief from the pain. you can wrap the ice cube in a paper towel and feed it to him so you can be sure he doesnt try to swallow it. This always worked for my little brother, my cousin, and my children. you may find though that they become quite dependant on it so be sure once you start doing this you have plenty of ice cubes for him to bite on. my children would go through ice pretty quick when they were teething. of course i also used anbesol, humprys teething pills, baby tylenol..etc.. the ice always helped.

If he is in pain when lying down, I'd check out his ears. When you get an ear infection, the pressure is much worse when lying flat. I'd also try giving him advil or motrin; while tylenol is a fever reducer and pain reliever, advil and motrin are those and anti-inflammatories - they will help with any swelling pain associated with either teething or ear pain. I agree with the earlier responder, however, it is quite a myth about babies running fevers with teething. He might also have a virus - which means mom and dad have to deal with the modified sleep schedule until he feels better.

Check to see if he has an ear infection. Those seem to hurt more when they are laying down.
I have the same advice as the other moms. The fact the he won't lay down might be an indication of an ear infection. It is so hard not getting any sleep. Good luck. His pediatrician can help you. The good news is that if it is an ear infection, once they are on an antibiotic that they get better REALLY fast.

My name is G. rodriguez. I read your post and I was wondering if you had shots given to your child a week ago . perhaps this is due to that. When a child has a bad reaction to . to many shots given at the same time .
If tylenol isn't helping then give him motrin I find it works better . I have 3 kids myslef one 12 one 6 and one 4.
