I just came a cross some information on the internet regarding uv gel nails. I would like to know if this would help me as I do not have nails on my two big toes. I do not know what exactly happened but I have never seen my big toe nails. The place [is it called nail bed?] where they once were is smooth. I read that some nails can be crafted using uv gel and then fixed onto my toes. Is this true? If so, would they last long? I do not wear open shoes as I am embarrassed that people will stare at my big toes
My dad is a podiatrist, so I called him about this. He's not familiar with gel nails (sounds like the nail techs who have written you are though). And he says there aren't many correction options a podiatrist can offer. I'm sorry! Let me know if there are any other specific questions you'd like answered and I can see if he has any thoughts.
Hi L., I'm currently in " Nail school" and would like to help. Yes there is such a thing called UV gel nails, but I don't know if you can put them on your toe nails. Do you have a nail plate? (A nail?) How did you loss your nail?

I am a nail tech and have been doing nails for 12yrs. I actually specialize in Gel Nails, I would not recommend putting Gel on your toes. I have a few clients with the same problem and what I have done is either apply a nail tip w/glue, this usually lasts up to 5 days or I will do an acrylic form that will adhere to the nail, however you HAVE to actually have some nail there or this won't work. Any type of artificial covering needs an actual nail to build off of. If you don't have this then I recommend putting a Nail tip on.

I do not have a nail on one of my big toes. For years I would not wear open toe sandals for the same reason. A few years ago I threw in the towel and figured the heck with it and bought my self some cute open toed sandals.(now I am addicted to them!) I had to realize that people aren't looking at my toes and it's all in my mind. And if they are, well then too bad. I hope I gave them something to talk about for a few minutes.
I had my first pedi a few months ago, also delayed because of the fear. (of course I will admit I waited until I was in another state to do it - Arizonia and I wanted the full treatment) The salon was wonderful about it and said they see that all the time, so we're not alone. They also put nail polish on my "empty" toe. It looked great, but of course it did not last too long, maybe a week. But it sure looked good while it lasted!
So I would suggest a nice pedi with some polish for your big toes. It will make you feel better about it, and you may actually want to show off your feet.

Talk to several nail technicians, preferably the ones that have been in business quite a while. I know my nail tech has photos, before and after, that she did with a woman who lost portions of her nails in a machine accident. She did a fabulous job on them. But she also said that the woman had gone to every nail tech in town, and had been turned down, until she came to mine. (In Rockford, IL)
I'm not sure you would have to have "fills" on something like that, as another person suggested, since the nails don't actually grow out...? My assumption would be no, but that's something to ask when you call.
Ive been a nail tech for 16 years and im sorry to say you cannot attach any kind of artificial nail to skin. You must have nail bed to attach to. It can be a short nail bed, but there must be something to attach to. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions. Someone suggested to glue on a plastic toe nail and that may be your easiest/only option. It may not stick very well but for special occasions it may work.
Like last poster said, I would see a Dr. first, then if insurance will not cover that, (that would be a cosmetic fix, not medical, so probally will not cover)look at Walmart, by the Lee Press ons, they have them for toes now. My sister hates the way her big toes look, so she uses these and they look soooo nice, and they don't cost 40-80 plus what you would pay for fills each month. You can put these on when you are wearing shoes that let your toes show and take them off when your not! Hope I helped!
I suggest you see a podiatrist first. They may have options for you, as well as advice on where you can go, maybe even how to get your insurance cover it. Have you ever had big toe nails that you can remember? Or can you remember a specific injury to your toes? Usually there is some kind of trauma to the nailbed that results in poor or no nail growth. Had it been caught at the time of injury, a surgery might have been performed to repair the nailbed and restore nail growth. I used to work for a podiatrist if you need a referral. Good luck!
