Seeking a New OB/GYN Doctor

The doctor that took me through my two pregnancies had to stop practicing due to a sudden allergy to latex. She passed me along to another doctor in her practice group, but I'm not nearly as happy with the new doctor.

Can anyone recommend a good OB doctor in the San Mateo/Foster City area. I'd prefer a female. But I'm really just looking for someone that makes me feel like a person and not a number or a case history.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I'm going to make some phone calls, but this gives me a great start!

I am an internist and used to practice across the street from Barbara Canida whom I'm assuming you are referring to. I like Dr. L. Dyer who is an Ob in San Mateo, not part of that group. Her office is smaller so might be more of what you're looking for.
Also, if you are no longer going to be having kids and don't have any unusual or complex Gyn issues, you might consider seeing an internist. Most of us do Paps and general exams and handle a wide variety of problems. :)

I know you'd prefer a female but I've heard nothing but rave reviews about Dr. Jan Rydfors in Redwood City I believe.

Hi J.,
Well, my doctor is actually in Daly City, but I love her and have been going to her for years. I actually live in Belmont now, but I take the drive to Daly City for my doctor =) Her name is Dr. Milagros Cabrera ###-###-####
I just recently had my first baby, and she was actually there to deliver too, which worked out nicely (you know how it depends on which doctor is on call). My doctor took great care of me while I was pregnant, she paid much attention to how I was developing, she even noticed that my fluid was a bit low towards the end and kept an even closer eye on me towards the end. My younger sister now goes to her too, and she always asks me how my sister is doing...its just really nice to know she remembers who I am, its a much more personable realationship, which is also very, very important to me.

Good luck =)

The doctor who delivered my first child was Julianna O'Callahan, who's affiliated with Sequoia Hospital. She was there for all of my appointments and actually delivered the baby. I think she's especially good because she started out as a nurse, has 3 (I think) kids of her own, and had her last child in her 40s, so has lots of personal as well as professional experience.

Her practice group, the hospital, and the labor/delivery nurses were great, as well. If you're okay with traveling to Redwood City, I recommend her. Here are some links:

For my second child I'd moved to SF, so had switched doctors. O'Callahan was much better than my OB up here. Good luck!

Just my two cents. I also had Dr. O'Callahan. I have a 6 year old and a 3 year old. She's the best doctor I've ever had. She has a great bedside manner. You won't find a better doctor.

Dr. Elaine Chien at Women's Care at Sequoia hospital is by far the BEST physician I have ever seen. I stumbled upon her through a recommendation and have her now as not only my OB, but switched her to my primary care physician because she is so excellent.

Although she is not in San Mateo or Foster City, I think an excellent doctor is worth the extra drive to Redwood City.

Lindsay, the Nurse Practioner at Women's Care is also fantastic.

Dr. Chien has also been written up on Yelp.com, another good source for recommendations.

Good luck.

Hi J.,

I love my OGYN. She is part of PAMF (palo alto medical foundation) but she has an office in Redwoood City. Her name is Dr. Julianne O'Callahan. You can find her number online. Just go to www.pamf.org and search for her name.

I have a 6 and 4 year old. I just had my 3rd a few weeks ago. I am 40 and it was really nice having a dr that understood what it was like to be pregnant at 40 as she had 3 kids in her early 40's. Not only is she knowledgeable and dependable, she is nice and very personal. Not once did I feel like "just another patient".

I hope you find her helpful!
