Seeking a New Church to Attend

This isn't really the appropriate forum for discussing religion so I won't go into detail here, but feel free to send me a message if you want to chat off of the mamasource board...
My request is I am looking for a church to attend in the Orlando area (I live in Casselberry) that is accepting of liberal values. I tried the Unitarian church but it wasn't really "spiritual" at all so it's not what I'm looking for.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

THANK YOU to everyone for your suggestions. Sorry I am not being specific and explaining what I mean by "liberal" but I don't think this public forum is the place to do so. I will happily have a healthy religious discussion with you if you'd like to send me a personal message. By the way, I looked into the Unity church and it seems to be EXACTLY what I am looking for... unfortunately there isn't one close enough to my home.

Orlando, I don't know so well, but I can recommend Poinciana Christian Church in Kissimmee. Their pastor is a wonderful man and the congregation welcomes all visitors with open arms. They have a great children's ministry team. I worked VBS the summer of my sweet 16. I also taught the 2nd grade Sunday School when I was down there for one year in college.

I haven't been to their new building yet, but it is Humongous compared to what they used to have! Oh, they also used to offer pick-up (call them to check if this is still available) for those who couldn't drive in or just sent their kids, everyone deserves to come to church!

Hi Tammi,
We worked with Pastor Rick Moore at our church here in Fort Myers when he was called to be children's pastor at Calvary Assembly of God-Orlando, 1199 Clay Street, Winterpark, FL 32789. Phone is ###-###-####. I can tell you that he and his wife Catrina just blessed our life and his children's ministry touched our son who is now 13. I don't know how far away you are but it is worth the trip to this phenomenal church! God Bless You and your family!

Tammi,
Hi I am an American living in Puerto Rico and our church has a church in Orlando. I am addicted. They preach very practical ways to be a better person and to let the Holy Spirit allow us to achieve big things. It is called Iglesia Fuente De Agua Viva on John Young Parkway it is in Spanish, but you can go and see if they have translation. What do you mean by liberal? M.

Make a list of possible churches in the area, then go visit one every Sunday. Keep track of the maybes and revisit. start shortening your list. I like the mwthodist church, because they don't have a lot of rules like the Catholic and Jewish. Believe in the trenity and be kind to all. Try SO Baptist
Some churches but their services on tv, watch a few.
Do not worry God and Jesus are everywhere your heart is.

There is a spiritual church call The Gathering Place in Orlando. The preacher is Sam Hinn. You can visit the site on the ____@____.com is located on Orange Blvd. From Orlando you would take 4E to exit 101A (SR64-A), turn left. Go to 3rd light and turn R onto Orange Blvd. Approx 1.5 miles down on the R. I don't attend that church because I live 2 hrs. away from Orlando but I have heard him when he is with his brother Benny Hinn. Just check it out.

I am new to the area too and I'm attending the Masters Touch International Church in Longwood. I like it so far. While you are church shopping you can always watch my old pastor on TV Pastor Joel Osteen, or go to www.joelosteen.com. His messages are always practical and uplifting. Lakewood is so much more than it is on TV though. I was in leadership there for many years and it's a beautiful church with so many ways to get connected to others. I really owe a lot to Lakewood for being there for me and my family and I miss everyone there a lot.

Hi! I'm not in the Orlando area, but the Christian denomination that tends to be most liberal is Episcopalian. If you can find one in your area, that might be a good match for you. They're similar to Roman Catholic, but have some beliefs that correspond to Protestant denominations.

I agree with the poster who advised you to pray... you might need to visit several different churches, but you'll know you're "home" when you get there. :)

Hi there, when my husband and I were looking for a church my Grandmother told me to look for one that said something like "Church of God" or a "Assembly of God" and we found this great church in Plant City, "Plant City Church of God" and we just love it! So good luck to you.
Also go for a few times before you join to make sure that it is what you are looking for. I trust that God will let you know when it is right, I know that he did for us and now it is our second family.
God Bless

Hi Tammi! I live in Tampa now but lived in Orlando for years. We attended Aloma Baptist Church, and absolutely loved it. I'm not sure what you mean by "liberal" values, but I know the people at Aloma are loving people, accepting of everyone no matter your background. It's a great place to teach your kids about the Bible and for all of you to develop a personal relationship with God. We were married there, and all of our kids were baptized there. We visit often and miss it terribly. I think you would be very happy there. Good luck!

I love Ultimate Life Church......I am a single mom, 4 year old daughter, a 14 yr old sister, 8 & 10 year old nieces and my mother also attends. We all love it there! I am from Altamonte Springs and have to travel but it is worth it! I used to attend Aloma Baptist and would not say anything bad about them at all, but Ultimate Life Church has helped my spiritual growth and my family's growth in so many ways. I actually watched them online before I attended. Sunday services you can watch online at www.ultimatelifechurch.com just go to watch live and click the On-demand button to see any of the last four Sunday's sermons. That way you can get a small feeling on whether or not it would be for you. Daycare is provided on Sunday's and most of the other events as well.

Greeting Tammi,

Have you ever tried a Unity church? It's different than Unitarian. I think I understand what you are looking for. Many years ago, in my search to find a church that I felt spiritually aligned with, I went to a Unitarian church and there were things that I liked about it (open minded, accepting, kind, etc) however, I come from a Christian background (my stepfather is a retired Presbyterian Minister) and I was hoping to find something that would make me feel more connected to my roots of Christianity yet still have some of the qualities that I experienced at the Unitarian Church (liberal, open minded, accepting of all faiths, etc).

Somewhat discouraged, I eventually stopped going to church and nurtured my spirituality privatley and with friends. Then, a year ago, a friend introduced me to Unity and I've been going ever since. I was amazed to actually (finally) find a Spiritual Community that I felt at home in.

If you want to learn more about Unity you can visit http://www.unityonline.org (also, towards the bottome of the home page there is a Directory where you could look up Unity Churches in your area).

FYI: On their website, their mission statement is "Unity helps people of all faiths apply positive spiritual principles in their daily lives." Their Vision Statement: "Transforming lives through an increasing awareness of unity with God."

Good Luck on your search! Whether it is Unity or another church, I know you will find what you are looking for!

Blessings,
S.
