K.K.

Hello,
Does anyone have any insight on any of the Elementary Schools in the Plano area? My son will be starting K for the 2009-2010 school year - yes I know it's a little early but it's my baby and of you course you know what it's like to want the best:)
According to the PISD website, he should go to Rasor. Any input on that school. It's a little out of the way for us.
Thanks!
J.

We moved from Plano to McKinney and we are in the Frisco ISD. They are awesome! In my opinion Plano schools are no longer what they used to be. However, Hughston was really good for our daughter.
I've heard that Rasor is a good school. Our neighborhood is set up in such a way that our children either go to Rasor, Beverly or Norton in Allen.
My daughter attended Beverly. The address is Allen but it is a Plano school located just East of Custer off Hedgcoxe on Duchess Dr. It is an excellent school. Blue Ribbon, exemplary and some of the highest ratings available. They continue to rate high yearly.
Mrs Kirby runs a fantastic school with great staff, great support from families and I am SO glad my daughter had the experience to be at Ms Kirby's school. This is the ONLY school in the PISD where I will substitute. My daughter started K in 2000 and is now in 8th grade. I am still subbing there at least once a week and sometimes more. My subbing is all pre-planned by the teachers for any in-service, science fair judging days, meetings, etc.
I do know that there have been waiting lists for children to get in to Beverly who do not live in the specified boundary for Beverly.
With all due respect to Plano schools....there are VERY FEW that I would avoid. Most of them are good.
Good luck and I hope your child does well where ever you choose.
J.,
I moved from San Antonio here and my son attended McCall. It was a great school I thought. The teacher and staff were always good to me. He only attended one year. I was very impressed, they did a lot to get the parents involved. They had a few family nights which I think is always great to get involved with the school and your child. I know some parents hate going to these events but I think it's great for the child as well as the parent. Yes, most of us help our children with homework and know what they are doing, however, to actually go through their days, or talk about what they are currently learning is great for everyone. Your child knows you care, the teacher knows you care, and you know you care, I see it as a win-win-win...
Anyway, from what I can tell Plano has a lot to offer their kids no matter what school you go too.
I believe in Plano you have to apply for the transfer every year if you do not go to your assigned school. I would keep this in mind because it is not gauranteed he could go to the same school every year. We transferred my son in k becasue we knew we were moving to Frisco soon and I agree you loose the neighborhood feeling when you are not in that school. There are lots of great elementary schools in Plano. Is there something wrong with the one you are assigned to? I would start talking to the parents in the neighborhood. The school we were assigned to there was not ranked very high, but the parents we spoke with seemed to LOVE it. Good luck!
I taught in Plano for almost 10 years...Rasor is a wonderful school...there are very few schools (maybe 3)in Plano that I wouldn't recommend. I hope this helps. :)
Carlisle Elementary is GREAT! It is rated exemplary by the state. The staff is very caring and there are a lot of experienced teachers there. My kids love it. The school was recently renovated and looks beautiful, with all new technology. The PTA is also active. That being said, if the school your child is supposed to go to, Rasor, is a good one, then send your son there. There are many benefits to attending your local school. It's really cool being part of the local school community. If your son attends a school out of the neighborhood, that sense of local community will be lost. If you do decide to attend a different school than the one he is assigned to, be sure to start the transfer process early. They will not accept children if the school is full. Good luck.
