A week or so ago a wrote about having a very server pain in my right side just below my ribs. I am 33 weeks pregnant and went to the doc on Wednesday. He checked me over and said he wasn't sure why I had that bad pain but to come in if it happens again. I haven't had the pain again but since Wednesday I have had to nights now where I have seen flickers of light while just sitting on the couch. I googled pain in right side followed by seeing lights while pregnant and preeclampsia came up. Now I don't have any other symptoms (that I know of at the moment) good blood pressure, not retaining water etc. but could I have it and not know it yet? Or have any of you woman seen flickers of light while pregnant and it turned out to just be nothing?

What can I do next?

When I was late in my pregnancy and while nursing I had a couple incidents of a "visual migraine" which involved weird flashing lights, tunneling in, and loss of peripheral vision - these lasted about 15 minutes - I didn't have any pain. Like you I immediately thought of preeclampsia but also had none of the other symptoms. The next day my OB/GYN was ready to send me off for neurological testing - but that doc knew right away what we were dealing with. But, I'd call your doc again - this is not a time to fool around.

Yes, I had flickers of light, or I would see shooting stars. I had preeclampsia and delivered 2 mos early. Call your doctor.... now.

I saw flickers of light and dark spots - when I was NOT pregnant, and they were optical migraines. Still, something brought them on. For me they were allergy triggered from a disgusting work environment. They are neurological and vascular and since you are pregnant, it is important to tell you doctor and get checked in case yours is from high blood pressure or... whatever! They can be a sign something is WRONG.

I had high blood pressure with both my pregnancies. I never had to take medicine for it, my Dr just watched it carefully. About 36 to 37 weeks it always got higher and I had to stay on bed rest for the last few weeks. I started seeing flashs of light kind of like a firework. It was due to my high blood pressure. I also started feeling like I had drank a couple of glasses of wine but of course I hadnt. I was induced with my first at 38 weeks and my second at 37 weeks because he was worried I was starting to get preclamsia. I did swell some but not an unreasonable amount. I never did have protein in my urine but my blood pressure was 150/100 if I was not laying down.

I don't know about the flickers of light during pregnancy but I am currently 37 weeks pregnant and last Sunday I had to go to the E.R because I was having a sharp, stabbing pain in my right side by my ribs like you and it turned out to be my uterus being irritated, I was also having contractions that were 34 seconds long. They ended up giving me a shot for the pain and to stop the contractions. The pain was very painful and I could barely walk! I hope you feel better.

If you confirm this is not any thing related to pregnancy, do get your eyes checked. It could be a retina related. Pretty serious ,it's better to get checked as soon as possible.

Yes, I saw flickers of light (and dark spots) when I was pregnant which resulted in moving my scheduled C-section up by a few weeks. I had pregnancy induced hypertension (high blood pressure) and was on bed rest. Your blood pressure would be elevated and you would have protein in your urine if you had preeclampsia.

Flickers of light can indicate vitreous degeneration. Have you seen an eye doctor recently? If not, perhaps you should.

Pain on your right side under the ribcage can indicate gallstones or gallbladder issues.

If you get a terrible headache that will not go away after you take Tylenol go to the ER immediately as that is a sign of elevated blood pressure.

Good luck.

I would "see stars" while I was pregnant too, it would happen to me when I got up too suddenly or even when I turned my neck quickly. It was jsuta the chnage in blood flow/blood pressure when it happened to me. It was not a problem at all for me, I just had to be more aware and carful about how I moved my body. I nevfer had high blood pressue, but I did check it on my own between appointments to be sure. Good luck!

HI--
I'm not sure about the light flickers (could be the rising amount of blood in your system). However, I do know that pain on the right side just under your ribs is either your liver or gall bladder. Try eating grapefruit or grapefruit juice and apple juice (pure). If you have gall stones that will help break them up. If you're getting constipated (a side effect of liver/gall bladder imbalance) take magnesium (too much will cause diarrhea, so start on a low dose and build). Or it could just be the baby pushing feet into those organs and causing discomfort.
