I don't know if Natick is too far, but there is a Kid-To-Kid on rt 9 in Natick. Good things, secondhand.

See if there are any Annie's Book Stops around you. Also check with the library - sometimes they have book sales of donated items. Also go to yard sales.
If you're really industrious, see if the local library and the supermarket will allow you to post flyers, and organize a book exchange for gently-read children's books. People can either just donate, or they can take a book home for every one they bring in. If you belong to a church or synagogue, they may let you use the space for free as a way of promoting literacy and barter in a down economy. Sometimes a local Newcomers Club has play groups that can be a source of networking and items-to-trade.
Good luck!

The Milford Public Library has a table of books, just a general assortment, that are second-hand books. I don't know the cost but they are based on donations so must be cheap. There are probably toddler books there. Worth a try if you're in Milford anyway!

There's an Annie's Book Stop in Marlborough on Route 20, just a tiny bit south of Firefly's BBQ.
There's also one in Northborough on W. Main Street. If that helps.
You can also check out local consignment shops - they're not just for clothes.
