My daughter is in first grade and she is entering her school science fair. Any ideas on a project for her age? I would like to do something fun and unique. Thank you.

We did the "Dancing Raisins in Sprite" but there were a lot of those at our fair, as there were with the vinegar soaked egg.
O. really good O. was petri dishes growing bacteria swabbed from the mouths of a pet cat, pet dog, the student and her little brother to see who had the most bacteria in their mouth. (The little brother won hands-down!)

Lots of free mini-labs you can download at http://topscience.org/ – some good starter ideas there.

I would do like the earth and all the Planets around it. You can get all kinds of foam balls at micheals and wire needed.

Can she blow bubbles with bubble gum? How about which bubble gum blows the biggest bubble. Take several different kinds of (let's say fruit kind bubble gum), chew each one for a certain amount of time and then blow bubbles. The best of 3 for each kind. You can take pictures of her doing it and put it on the board. Keep the wrappers for decoration, etc.

just an idea. Good luck!

What about taking 6 different plant or flower (of your choice) and watering them with 6 different liquids (water, milk, soda, kool-aid, beer, no watering) and in different places (inside, outside, in a closet, in a bathroom, etc) and see what the effects are. I did this close to the same age and it was fun! I also took pictures of myself with each of the plants at the beginning and the end to show the difference!

How about finding out what happens when you drop Mentos in soda. You can video it and have it run continuously with an explanation as the report.

It's loads of fun, but super messy with little ones.

My first grader just did a science fair project. At her school, Kindergarteners and first graders are only allowed to enter collections or a topic of scientific interest. My daughter loves dinosaurs and has been collecting them since she was three, so she did hers on dinosaurs. We put some facts and pictures on a tri-fold board, decorated it (we got to use a hot glue gun!) and she was able to tell facts to people that came by her exhibit and asked questions.

Other first grade collectors had rocks, feathers, shells, other types of animals, etc. Some of the other first grade exhibits were what oil does to water and how it affects ocean life and an x-ray and explanation of what it was and how it was done.

We kept it really simple, focusing on a subject she likes and already shows interest in and HAD FUN!!!

A fun on e is have her predict what type of liquid will help a seed grow best : water, orange juice, soda, or milk. (or any liquids you want to try) and then let her plant bean seeds in separate containers and try it out. (bean seeds start to grow fairly quickly). She can also do some measuring with them to make a simple graph OR show how each cup changes over time - draw a picture of each cup every other day for a time period.

Have fun!!!
