Scaly Foot with Sore?

Tonight I just noticed something odd on my 2-year-old daughter's right foot. On the big toe and the ball of her foot is scaly and dry, and looks like her skin is peeling. Also on the pad of her big toe looks quite red, almost like a sore. When I touched the red spot, she said it hurt. I've never seen anything like this before -- any ideas what it might be? I'm going to call her pediatrician tomorrow morning, but thought I'd get your ideas in the meantime. Thanks a bunch!

Sounds like Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease, aka Fifth's disease .....infectious viral condition. I would take her to the doctor! Good luck..

Any time I hear about sores on the feet, hands or mouth that look like they could be the least bit like the start of a blister, I recommend taking to the doc. Esp if in Day Care (you didn't say if your children are in Day Care, but mine are). My three year old had a fever for a few days that wasn't breaking. Since it was Friday, we didn't want to risk a weekend problem, so my husband took her to the pediatrician. She found the blister down her throat - she would never open her mouth that far for us to see that!!! Anyway, since the sores often can come after the fever, sometimes they don't get connected. And a blister on the foot and dry pretty quickly to look like pealing skin (depending on the shape). Hand-Foot-and Mouth Disease is pretty harmless, but the blisters are painful and it is very contagious for the little ones. You shouldn't get it, though.

May just be dry skin, but it is worth checking out. It was good to know the reason my little girl was so miserable and wasn't eating well(the two little sores in her mouth were slow to dry out - go figure, its wet in there <g>).

Did she burn it on something or was it a blister, maybe just a callous.

Dr.Gott writes a column in numerous papers. Quite a few people have written in claiming Vicks Vaporub does wonders for things like this. Give it a try! J.

My daughters fingers have excessive peeling...doc said it was fine. I don't know why it is so? But she is use to it, and will come up to me holding her fingers out saying skin, and I will have to go get the nail clippers and clip away the skin. Her hands do not get red though, or look like sores. Just the peeling, and a lot of hang nails along in with it.

could be a plantars wart that is infected. Kids get them a LOT i just found out.....

also, peeling skin is not normal on feet. Often the kids contract a fungus like atheletes foot from showers, pools, bath tubs, shared moist walking spaces. It has to be treated with an antifungal cream.

My daughter's feet peel too. Unfortunately it is a family trait. I have found that if she messes with it she will make it raw & it will hurt. The only think I do is to take the nail trimmers & trim the lose skin away & keep her well lotioned. Not sure what really causes it though because her feet never to really seem like they are dry. I would love to hear what your ped has to say.
