I got, and set up, this really great sandbox. Now I'm trying to buy sand. If you've gone through this, you know there is everything from $12 to $300 to fill this sandbox. Does anyone have a favorite? or a reason not to get certain sands? does one stick together best for making a sandcastle? Is there one that doesn't travel indoors on your kids clothes ;-) (wishful thinking).
If you can find a sand that doesn't travel indoors please let me know. You can buy sandbox sand at Home Depot, OSH, WalMart etc. When we were kids and had a sandbox my dad would take us to the beach with a couple 5 gallon buckets and we would just use beach sand, which we all know is great for sandcastles. It's free and you can enjoy a day at the beach as well. Good Luck!! :)
We purchase the QuickCrete sandbox sand from Lowe's. It's about $3/bag. We just cleaned our small sandbox and used 2.5 bags (we have one of the plastic turtle ones from Walmart as a point of reference).
You can get cute Crayola colored sand at WalMart - it's ~$5/bag.
I'm not aware of any that don't automatically stick to our kids. So, we strip them down and hose them off before they come back in. We let them wear their crocks/flipflops in the sandbox because they can be easily hosed as well.

Naked children are easier to de-sand with a hose before being allowed into house. Shorts with cuffs and pockets are every mother's worst nightmare. Other than that, sand is sand, and is great.
We get playground sand from Home Depot. It's like $3.50 a bag. It took about 6 bags to fill ours.
Ha Ha sand that doesn't come in the house. Now that would be awesome!
We buy our sandbox sand from Home Depot. I think it is like $3 bag. We put a few new bags in a year. As far as I know, the best thing for making sand castles is to get the sand wet. Not too wet or you'll have a pond, but enought to make it stick.

Wal Mart sells colored sand in the garden center (for sand boxes) and kids LOVE it!!
we just used "play sand" from Walmart garden center....very cheap and worked fine( it did get all over though:))
I buy our sand from Toys R Us , it comes in a 5lb bag and costs around $15 , it all ends up over the grass anyway and you have to end up replacing it , plus if you make it wet enough they all stick together to make a castle.
We built a sandbox for our daughter last year (some wood from home depot and some nails). When we were talking to the guy at HomeDepot about sand he said he wouldn't recommend buying it from there. He has kids and recently built them a sand box and he said the bag (of sand box sand) actually says something about not being used around kids. We ended up spending a bunch of money at Toys R Us on sand but felt better knowing they were safe from any added chemicals, or whatever the reason the other bags say not for kids.
They do make sand that is best to build sandcastles. My friend in WA bought it, I think she said it was sandcastle sand.
We got the sand from Toys R Us and it is okay but I don't love it. It is too coarse as far as I am concerned but luckily my toddler does not care.
We bought the playground sand from OSH. It is bigger grains of sand so it doesn't travel on clothes, usually, and it has less dust then other sands which is a bonus. My kids and the neighbor kids can make castles with it.
