We are looking for a good place to go on vacation this summer... one that keeps coming up in our discussion is San Diego. I was wondering if anyone would share stories of their San Diego vacations. Like, is the zoo really that great? How are the beaches (I definitely would want to stay on the beach). Good restaurants-- kid friendly places? Any commentary would be appreciated! Thank you...

What can I do next?

I would plan on going in maybe July or August if you are wanting to spend alot of time at the beach. The water is still very cold in June and only tolerable in July or August. Also plan on bringing sweatshirts as it gets really cool in the evening, especially if you are on the beach. The Zoo is huge so wear comfortable shoes and don't expect to see it all in one day. La Jolla is beautiful as is Coronado Island. I second the other mom's suggestion about the Hotel Del Coronado and Sea World and LegoLand is close but I haven't been there. We love San Diego!!! Another option for you is Catalina Island (you take a ferry out of Long Beach) and then you would be closer to the attractions in LA (Disney Land, Universal Studios, Hollywood, Beverly Hills etc).

My husband and I went to San Diego a few years ago for Valentine's Day. It was before we had our daughter but I still think its a great place for families.

I'm the past, I have been to the zoo which I think is a must do. Its great. La Jolla is a nice area with shopping and eating. We went kayaking in La Jolla also which was fun. While doing that we saw dolphins, sea lions, and where Dr Seus apparantly used to live. The kids in the group seemed to really like it, as did us big kids. :)

We didn't stay on the beach so I can't help there but they were ok. There's kinds a lot of seaweed on the CA beaches but its not everywhere. Water isn't that warm either but its bareable.

We went to a really good place to eat called Island Prime. Its close to the airport so we ate lunch there before heading out. Its right on the water close to the old naval yard which was also neat.

Hope this helped a little! Have lots of fun! San Diego is one of my favorite cities!

I lived in So. Calif and went to SD several times. This was before I had kids but there is a lot to do with children there as well. The Zoo is nice...wouldn't say it's any nicer than the Ft. Worth but because it's in So. Cal you get pretty palm trees and nice weather while you roam around. Sea World is usually a must for families and I would also suggest you see the Hotel Del Coronado...beautiful hotel where they filmed "Some like it Hot" with Marilyn Monroe. They have an old fashion manually operated elevator and a great view of the beach with a nice restauraunt. For the adults GREAT tropical drinks and they do cute Shirly Temple style drinks for the kids. I know it's expensive to stay at but I think they have a kids club and even if you don't stay there I would reccomend you visit it. There is tons of shopping and just walking around the Gaslamp District is entertaining. Most of the beaches are very nice but some are a bit rockier than others so ask at your hotel and they will give you the kid friendly ones. Keep in mind that like Texas, the weather there varies from AM to PM and can get quite cool in the morning and evening so you hav to layer. That's all I can think of...hope it helps!

San Diego is GEORGOUS. Of couse I am bias, from So California. San diego is an upscale beach city. Def a great place to vacation with kids. La Jolla in particular is georgous. Zoo is great in my opinion. Legoland not so great for us but some people like it. Beaches are cold unless you are there in August. But they overall feel of San Diego is wonderful. You can also drive to Disney one day.

San Diego has tons for the family. It is absolutely gorgeous. It is pricey, though. But I think it would offer something for your whole family. I never liked zoo's prior to the San Diego Zoo. It is awesome and changed my whole outlook about zoos. As for musuems they are some of the best I've ever encountered and there were tons of families at them when I went as a newlywed.
