Safe Treatment for Baby's Hand Rash

My six-month old son has developed a mild rash on his hand, probably from pre-teething hand-sucking. What is a safe treatment for the rash? I use Aquaphor for any other rashes, dry skin, etc. he may have, but the label says it's harmful if ingested, so I don't want to use it on his hands since they're constantly in his mouth.

So What Happened?

I hadn't even thought of using lanolin! It worked great and I have so much left over from my earlier nursing days. Thanks so much for the responses.

My one year old daughter is a thumb sucker and started to get a rash from the constant exposure to moisture. I put a little lanolin breast ointment on her thumb before she goes to bed at night and it has helped tremendously. It should be safe even for your son who sucks his fingers constantly throughout the day since breastfeeding moms apply the ointment to their nipples and it doesn't have to be washed off before the baby nurses.

I would recommend using the lanolin that is used for nursing mom's nipples. Lanisoh or another brand I can't think of right now. I have used that on my kids and it seemed to help their skin and isn't harmful.

HI there. The brand "Earth Mama, Angel Baby" has amazing, organic products. They are online and at places like Whole Foods, and some are even at Babys r Us. Specifically their Calendula Cream is wonderful!! It even works on ezema, so hopefully the rash will respond really well to it, with no real worries if your little one sucks on some.

I'm so glad that the lanolin worked! We use it at our house for crusty elbows, and sometimes crusty heels, and other dry areas. My 24 yr old son used to ask for it when he was in high school, calling it "that sheep stuff". :-)

Olive oil also works well, for less problematic dryness issues.

One of the problems with using Aquaphor is that it has mineral oil in it, and mineral oil can leach fat-soluble vitamins out of a baby's body, even when it is used externally. Taking it internally would be even worse. So I am glad that you decided to not use it on your baby's hands.

(Unfortunately, most products labeled "baby oil" are pure mineral oil, when that's the last thing we should be putting on a baby).

Best wishes,
J.

I had twins with sensitive skin and dryness. I learned about Arbonne and used their baby essentail oil product. It does not contain mineral oil and absorbs into the skin (not greasy on top). This heals up the skin and does not have dyes or fragrances. If you would like me to send you a free sample I would be happy to do so.
Good luck.

My doctor said to use Crisco on my son's hands. He said it wouldn't matter if he ingested it. It worked for us.
