Running a Fever Without Any Symptoms

My son just turned 11 years old in January. When he was a baby - 5 years old or so, the only "illness" he ever had were high fevers. He never had any other signs or symptoms. If he caught something or was run down, he'd run a fever. I'd give Motrin/Tylenol and it would go away in a day or 2.

My son is 4 and last week he had a fever for 5 days that I thought would never go away, but I kept switching from Motrin to Tylenol all through the day and it finally just went away. But he had no other symptoms and actually you couldn't tell he was sick unless I didn't give him the medicine. Hopefully this helps you.

Yes, my son has had about 2 fevers that didn't result with symptoms. Sometimes it is the type of virus that is going around. I wouldn't think too hard about it and it should break by day 3/4. My son had this once, with no other symptoms, and then on the 4th day broke out in a rash. I freaked out because the doctor didn't say this would happen. It was a common childhood illness call Roseola.

So don't be surprised if this happens and just call the doctor so they can confirm. Just continue to give fluids, Motrin, and if it doesn't go away in the time frame the doctor gave you go back. But I think things should be okay!

It's always hardest when our kids can't tell us if something hurts! My doctor says to treat pain, but not necessarily just fevers. My twins are older than your daughter, but just last week they both had fevers ranging from 100.5 to 103.9 and no other symptoms. They were tired from fighting off whatever it was and I made sure to keep them hydrated. After they were fever-free for about 24-36 hours each got a little diarrhea and clear runny noses. They are not teething. So their bodies must've fought off whatever virus it was. With my older daughter, I always checked her throat to see if it was red. Often, it seemed she had a high pain tolerance for cold symptoms at a young age, but her tonsils would be red and swollen. It is hard to tell, but I'm sure your daughter's little body is doing whatever it needs to to stay healthy. Just make sure she's having regular wet diapers and her lips aren't dry. Also, my pediatrician said that the inside of their lower eyelids should be nice and pinkish red when they are fully hydrated; white would be an early sign of dehydration. Love her up & she'll probably be fine. As for thermometers, we use a Braun ear thermometer very similar to the ones at our doctor's office. It was about $30 at Babies R Us and Target also carries them.

I ditto the other moms.. it could just be a virus that has been going around.

Keep an eye out, and don't be too alarmed if she develops a flat pink lacy rash on the trunk of her body. My son had a fever for 3 days (it was high...102-103) we treated it at home, i did call the ped though, and they said give tylenol (we can't use motrin because of the stomach upset issue with Ibuprofen - he had reflux - it has never made my kids fevers budge though, so I don't ever use it anyway).

anyway...If she develops a rash, it could be roseola. characterized by a moderate to high fever for about 3 days, then the fever breaks, and the rash appears. no other symptoms (at least from my little guy - unless you count him being cranky).

I dont believe there is anything they can do to treat it - it's a virus, and it is contagious. My ped. office diagnosed over the phone and said they didn't need to see him for roseola. let it run it's course.

I have found a warm bath helps a fever come down, and makes them feel better all around.

I am going to agree with the other moms as well. Fevers are our bodies way of fighting things off (viruses, etc). Unless she seems really miserable, I wouldn't even give the motrin. Let her body fight it.

But yes, both my kids have had high fevers (even in the 102's and 103's) and it can be the roseola that the other mom's have mentioned or just a silly old virus that we will never know what it is.

My almost 2 year old went through this a month ago. He had a fever between 100 and 102 for about 5 days. Other than that, he was totally fine. I didn't call the doctor until day 4, and they told me they would normally have liked to see him earlier, but I told them it has been going down. So, we waited a day and then it broke and I never took him in. I know MANY moms who have been going through this odd sickness lately. They have all been fine. I personally didn't want to subject my kid to tests when he was acting normally. So, do what you feel is best. Just know that we went through this as well and we were fine.

Boy, this is such a common question. I am Peds nurse, and a school nurse to ages 3-10 and this is my favorite answer. There are no rules when it comes to fever. Some kids will run fevers while teething- that is a fact. Some will try to dispute it, but frankly, two of my own children did not and one did. Every single tooth was awful! So, yes, kids can run fevers also for no apparent reason, viruses ususally. In my own home if a kid runs a fever for a few days and just doesnt seem to be getting better, i will take them in. Sometimes it's something as easy as an ear infection due to cold, but sometimes it's just another day or two and they get better. I wish that each and every child acted the same way, but they sure dont. Some kids also respond better to Tylenol than others-ask your MD for proper dosing.
