I was sad to learn of his death.

I think he was one of the comic genius' of our time.

Whenever I heard his name, it brought a big smile to my face!

Anyone else feel this way?

What can I do next?

My son mentioned it to me when we got home earlier. Very sad.

I will always remember his role in Good Morning, Vietnam. I don't think it was an extremely popular movie, and it certainly wasn't comedy in the way that Jumangi or RV or Mrs. Doubtfire or Flubber were... But there was a dark, sad, drowning sense in that movie that, in hindsight, may well have been how he felt all the time.
If you haven't seen that movie, I recommend it. It is not a children's movie. But I think he plays a role not so different than his real life in the movie... in the midst of misery and suffering, he brought smiles to other people's faces.
RIP

I have been actually crying about this for awhile. I am soooo sad. And I am angry. He was identified as bipolar. I used his fight, his success as an example to my son who acts frequently in college plays, acted since he was little. He has fought the same fight. Now how do I tell him? I know not what to do. I am sooo sad.

So sad.

I always think of him less as a comedian and more for roles like Dead Poets Society, Good Morning Vietnam, Good Will Hunting, The Fisher King.

He was an amazing actor and I'm so sorry he lost his battle with depression and addiction.

ETA: I was 11 when I saw Dead Poets Society and bawled my eyes out at "O Captain, my Captain!" It was my first "real" movie.

It's a wake up for sure.
I was diagnosed with severe depression in january. It took me almost a YEAR to finally get up the nerve to go to the doctor and say, "I am feeling hopeless."
I have a loving husband, great kids, am close to my family......and I just couldn't get out of my funk or shut off the "voices" that were bad talking me in my head. I was miserable.
BUt there is still a stigma about going to the doctor and admitting there is a problem. For little ol' me, a housewife! I have to imagine that it's even harder when you are famous.
This is something to talk with our kids about. Depression is real. Kids get depressed. We should let them know when they are feeling hopeless that there IS hope. I have to vehemently disagree with the mom below me. Suicide has been around forever. This doesn' tmake it a more realistic option. It brings a face to depression and mental illness. It should make people more aware of it and more able to spot the signs in someone they love.

This is very, very sad news- I didn't know until now.

He will be very well missed. One of my favorite movies of his was Death to Smoochy... not a huge hit, but very funny and rather dark. He was my inspiration--and maybe everyone else's--- back in 1978 or so when Mork first appeared. He brought a silliness and lightness and created his own iconic comedy style back then. It was good to see him branching out into dramatic roles and oh, what a blessing he was to so many. My heart goes out to his wife and family- we lost a celebrity but they lost someone so very, very real.

I just saw a headline now... I felt like Rosemuda, just bewildered. He made some really great movies--Didn't he do The Fisher King? He really was able to capture the humor in tragedy and the sorrow in comedy. Oh too sad!! He was way too young to be gone already.

Laurie A and Suz expressed it so well. And for the person who wondered how to tell their son--remember that everyone has their own path. No matter where another person ends up, there is nothing that dictates we will follow them.

As a little girl, he was my first real crush. I loved Mork and I loved his rainbow suspenders. I loved him in so many things, even the much hated Popeye movie....man I love that movie! This one hurts...during my labor and delivery, my husband was wearing a Robin Williams shirt from when we saw him live. It feels like he has been a part of my whole life, and it feels too soon to lose this great talent.

I liked his movies. I can't say I will necessarily mourn *him* as I didn't know him personally... but I am definitely saddened to think that he is gone, and I feel very sad for his family.

Mrs. Doubtfire! There are so many movies and shows I loved watching him in...

Many comedians are struck with depression - Jim Carrey suffers from depression. I know there are others.

While he was best known of comedy, it was his dramatic roles where I more connected with him. I loved Awakenings and Good Will Hunting. Such a profound actor and entertainer (and icon) that will surely be missed.

I know this may sound heartless, but more than sad, I'm actually angry this happened. Now my youngest child is trying to find out what "asphyxiation" means. I hate hearing about this because any kind of publicity on suicides seems to bring on more of them. It becomes more of a realistic option to many people prone to depression and mental illness when we hear so much about this, and the media coverage will be significant. I do feel so, so sad for his poor family.

I am horrible at picking movies, but am always sure I found a good one when I see that the movie stars Robin Williams.

I am sad he will not make any more movies for us, however, we are fortunate that he made us laugh. As for his family, a true loss.

For a laugh today, my husband had me pull up Robin Williams youtube on viagra.

I am with the others of feeling sad and angry.

Suicide is a terrible thing and to really understand how it feels truly sucks. Depression is a REAL disease and drugs are so insanely bad for people.

I pray the media will give his family time to grieve without being in their faces.

Yes, definitely. I have a friend, early 20s, that does not like him. She said he was stupid. Could not understand him, she said. He could make you smile even if the movie or show made no sense. Will definitely miss him.

He was wonderful. I just found out a little while ago how he killed himself. Bless his heart, he must have been in SUCH a dark place. I think he must have been just SO desperate, didn't wake his wife, and succumbed to his despair. The middle of the night is such a bad time - if he could have gotten to the morning, perhaps he could have gotten through this.

I think that not only was he a wonderful actor, he had an amazing mind. His ability to ad-lib made so many of his roles SUPER successful. If Disney had figured out that HE was what made Alladin a hit, they would have given him anything he wanted to be in the second movie.

I hope that they'll have a Robin Williams movie fest. I sure would appreciate that...
