Rising HCG Levels After I Was Told I Was Having a Miscarraige

I should be between 7 and 8 wks pregnant. On July 16th I started light spotting brown mucus and some red blood with very mild cramping (not really even as strong as menstral cramps). I went in on July 18th, My Dr. said I was around 6 wks 4 days and my HCG level was at 974, they did a vaginal ultrasound and saw a sac and start of a baby but no heart beat, (could it have just been too early to see the heart beat?) with the spotting and bleeding they thought I was miscarrying and told me to go home and try to relax and let nature progress (they were very nice about it). I went in again 2 days later and my HCG level had doubled and I had it tested again on Monday the 25 and it has doubled again. I haven't had any spotting or bleeding since the24th. I am going in tomorrow for another ultrasound and more blood work. If I miscarried would my HCG levels be increasing this much, or could I still be pregnant?

So What Happened?

Well I had my ultrasound and blood work...still not sure what is going on. So stressful! They saw the sac but couldn't find anything in it. My HCG level went up by 2100, so now it is at 5480. My doctor still isn't sure it is a viable pregnacy and didn't give me much hope. I am going in next Thursday again for another u/s and more blood work. Hopefully we see something. I am not sure if I can agree next week to a D&C, I think I want to be sure I haven't jumped the gun and not waited long enough. If I am off by 8-10 days that could make the difference. And if my body decides that it truely isn't a viable pregnacy then it will let me know. I so badly want to be pregnant but don't want to force something that isn't good. My heart breaks and jumps everytime I think I might be pregnant or I might not be...my emotions are fried and I am leaning on my faith and husband to get me though this. Thank you for all your words of support, they mean the world. Will let you know more next week.

My first thought was that you may have miscarried a twin like someone else mentioned. I hope things go well tomorrow!!

I'm optimistic that you are still pregnant. It's even possible that you had a vanishing twin but they didn't know because of positioning. I have a friend that miscarried one baby and was still pregnant with his twin.

I'd say you are still pregnant! Good luck!! (your hcg levels would not continue to rise)

ETA: I just want to add that there is a difference between levels going up vs levels NOT going down immediately. I don't think it's very common for levels to continue to go up in an unhealthy pregnancy. I also don't want to get your hopes up because I've been through a lot trying to get pregnant and stay pregnant but I would be cautiously optimistic. Please come back and update, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

My sister went through 5 miscarriages, before she was able to successfully carry to term. It was common for her HCG to go up. They said the reason, is her body was trying to catch up to the fact her pregnancy was not actually viable. It often took 6 weeks for her HCG to get the the non-pregnancy level, after the baby was no longer living.

With that said, 7-8 weeks pregnant is quite early. Can you go back again and have them look around? You never know, sometimes doctors see things that early (or don't hear the heartbeat), that really aren't there...or are!!

Sounds like you are pregnant. I bled quite a bit for three months and went
on to carry my son and deliver a healthy baby. Good luck. I hope it all
works out. When you had that first ultra sound it was probably too early
to see a heartbeat.

You won't know for sure until they do another ultrasound, of course.

I had a vaginal ultrasound of an embryo that measured exactly 6 weeks and 4 days and we saw the heartbeat (I still have the picture). I miscarried a week or so later.

I think you are still pregnant too! I have never been in this position before, but modern technology CAN be wrong. I would say the rising HCG levels is a very good sign you are still pregnant. I will say a prayer for you!!
God Bless,

My levels were very high and doubling. I went in for an US because i had no idea what my dates were (I had the mirena removed 10 weeks earlier and hadn't had a period yet and could have been anywhere from 5 to 10 weeks). According to the doc, my US showed a sac but nothing else and my blood work indicated I should have been 6 1/2 weeks pregnant and therefore there should have been a heart beat. I had had some light spotting, but I had that with all my pregnancies. I had horrible diarrhea the entire short pregnancy which was unusual for me. My levels never dropped because my body hadn't yet figured out that the pregnancy wasn't developing. They did a D &C the next day after he assured me that the pregnancy was not going to progress and that for some reason my body hadn't figured it out yet. He said I could wait and my body could catch up and figure it out in a few weeks, but why put off the inevitable and put myself through that heart break over and over waiting for it to happen on its own. 2 months later I was pregnant again and had an US done at 6 weeks 4 days and the heart beat was very visible. I'll be thinking of you.

It's possible your dates are incorrect and you are indeed pregnant. Some women ovulate later than expected and conceive later (that was me every time, changing my due date 2-3 weeks each pregnancy). Doubling Hcg can mean two things: viable (healthy!) pregnancy or molar pregnancy (think abnormal tissue). Please try to relax tonight until ultrasound sorts this out for you. Your story is very common as I have observed it many times in my practice. Usually it has a happy ending---in about 9 months with birth of the baby. Midwife Mom of 3

I miscarried 12 years ago. My HCG levels were definitely going down when I went back for each test. So hard for you not to know! Hope you're still pg.

My daughter was asked if they could use her experience for a medical journal. She had a full blown miscarriage at about 2 months along. They sent the solid materials to pathology so it was the fetus.

Several weeks later she called me at work and told me she was crazy. She knew the baby was dead inside her and she was freaking out. Her pregnancy symptoms were still there and not going away.

I met her at the hospital and they proceeded to tell her she was just pregnant again. She was adamant she had not done anything to get pregnant. The doc ordered blood work to prove to her she was and that she was just a few weeks along.

My daughter asked the nurse to please do an ultra sound to see if she was while they waited for the blood tests. The nurse basically did it to humor her. Her heart rate was normal but her tummy's heart rate was over 100. The nurse's jaw just about hit the floor. She told her the monitor would not have picked up a fetal heart rate until around 16 weeks.

She had been carrying twins and lost the one. The second baby did not show up on any testing they did at the docs office after the "miscarriage". The blood levels had not gone down either.

It can go either way. HCG doubling is a good indication that things are good but the ultrasound will be the best. Try and relax and think positive thoughts! Good luck on the ultrasound.

If it's doubling you could still be pregnant. I spotted brown for a month with my youngest. I would go in for another untrasound. A heart beat may not have shown on the 1st one. I think the date if iffy for the heart beat to show up around that time. Good luck I will keep you in my prayers.

I just saw something like this on the show I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant. They told the lady she miscarried because they didn't hear a heartbeat and she was very depressed about it so didn't eat right/drank etc. Well one day then she ended up having a baby but couldn't believe it since they told her she miscarried. Luckily her baby didn't have a ton of problems since she wasn't taking care of herself but she felt awful about it. Hopefully you are still pregnant!
