Ridiculous Diaper Rash

My 19mo. daughter has just recently been getting a really bad diaper rash. It started Thursday, last week, with a full-of-poop diaper. By Friday, it was very red and sore and she was very uncomfortable. She even had a little blister. Over the weekend, I changed her a lot and used Butt Paste. It got a lot better over the weekend. However, when she went back to daycare on Monday, it came back and got bad again, still bad today. I have been talking to the daycare provider, she says she changes her frequently and uses the Butt Paste, but her skin seems to immediately be inflamed by a poop. Which finally brings me to my question, Could this be caused by something she is eating at daycare? Has anyone experienced this and been able to narrow it down to a specific food or type of food? Or has anyone heard anything about enzymes in the food not breaking down correctly?

What can I do next?

Could be from a variety of foods she is having. Is she having juice or fruits? I'd limit those. Or anything acidic like marinara sauce or pineapple?

Next, think about lactose intolerance.

Third, it could be the type of diapers or wipes you are using but if it just started, I doubt that.

Is she on any medication? There are lots that cause diaper rash.

When my grandson was tiny he couldn't have anything with yogert. Even the little yogert bites, that look like chocolate chips. If he did he got really bad diaper rash.

My son's little tush LOVED to have a rash it seemed ... here is what fixed that right up
Mylanta no flavor (yes the stomach stuff) dabbed on the rash with a cotton ball then we put zinc cream or vaseline over the Mylanta to keep it on the skin and not let it soak into the diaper. Solid remedy, day care thought we were crazy at first then they did it and told all the other parents when their kids got rashes too! Our pedi tried it on his baby when he asked how we got rid of his chronic rashes (we were about to use the prescription only cream) and tried it at home and told all of his other parents about it from then on! This is one old wives tale that actually WORKS!

My son had this for 3 weeks!! First we thought it was diaper rash (Got the best meds on the shelf for that $$), then we thought it was a yeast infection (got meds for that... $$$), then we thought it was slapped cheek disease (he had a red cheek to go with this as well as a fever), FINALLY we took him to the ped and he said that he had gotten Staff, due to wetness. (When the skin gets wet and stays wet (poop or pee) it can cause a bacterial staff or strep infection. You should take her to see the pediatrician for a prescription antibiotic ointment. )

He prescribed antibiotic ointment ($10) we also got some calomine lotion for the itch and discomfort, I added some baking soda in his bath water, and let him run around stark nekkid without diapers on whenever I know he will stay dry for a while.

TELL THE DAYCARE TEACHER TO CHANGE HER EVERY HOUR FOR A WEEK. It can be that her diaper stays wet for more than 2 hours.

good luck!

My nephew had a severe diaper rash that they were having trouble eliminating. It turned out to be a yeast infection. Once on medication from the pediatrician, the rash went away.

Could be yeast infection -- and then would need lotrimin to clear up.

But with a blister -- you might want to check with the doctor

First you need to clear up the rash, they get crazy out of control so fast. We had the same problem with our daughter. The doctor had me get OTC yeast infection cream for the rash and it cleared up in a day or two. You can also give her cool[er] oatmeal baths for discomfort [we bought the Aveeno packets]. I also found that by switching from Butt Balm to Desitin made a difference. Before she goes to bed at night we slap on a little Aquafor ointment as a preventative. She has been fine ever since - no diet change needed. Good luck!

My son had this problem when eating citrus and or acidic foods (oranges, tomato juice, etc). It makes the poop acidic and tears their little bums up. Has she been drinking a lot of orange juice or lemonade?

It's important to know what causes the rash to avoid it's recurrence but also to know what kind of rash it is. My son had a terrible ____@____.com months. My doc recommended making my own mix of hydrocortizone, lotrimin & neosporin... on clean, dry skin to treat the skin, then desitin to protect it. You may want to go to the doc & they might prescribe Nystatin. Good luck! Painful diaper rash sucks!

Try Triple Paste. It's expensive but well worth it.

Any acidic foods such as mandarin oranges can cause a terrible rash... Go to your pharmacy and ask for Resinol (it is behind the counter, but NOT a prescription). This is what our pediatrician has us use and it has seriously been the MIRACLE diaper cream. It also has what orajel has in it, so that it will ease the pain of the rash. I promise you it works amazing. Hope this helps! Good luck!

use lotrimin lotion. like the stuff for athletes foot. a lot of my son's diaper rashes were caused from yeast. that's a tip his pediatrician gave us some time ago. smear the lotrimin all over then the butt paste. rash will go away fairly quickly. good luck

Bananas might cause this. I would keep her diaper off whenever possible.

Try using the purple Desitin-that is the only thing amongst all products over the counter that helped my daughter!

With my youngest child, she was prone to diaper rashes if her diaper wasn't changed immediately of her taking a poop. The only diaper rash ointment that would work for her was desytin. Applied liberally after each changing even if it was just pee and not pooo. Worked like a charm.

I have two kids and this worked everytime!
I have a diaper rash remedy that I learned from my pediatrician Dr. Jay Gordon. Buy concentrated grapefruit extract from Whole Foods, put a couple drops into a small spray bottle filled with filtered water, spray the rash area and let it air dry. The grapefruit extract dries out the diaper rash immediately. It could be that the rash is reappearing because the bacteria or whatever it is not going away fully.
I have no idea about the rash being caused by food but it could be possible. Dairy? Sugar? I would try eliminating those... Best of luck!

We deal with this finally on child number three our last one :)

We have all the creams you can think of. Try soaking her in an oatmeal bath. Will soothe the rash.

Then pat area dry and leave her undiapered to let air dry a bit...Get aquafor and layer her bottom very generously...I mean real thick...then on top of that use Tripple paste cream. Do this frequently and especially at night before bed time.

If it doesn't improve you may need an antifungal cream that is over the counter like Lotrimin (sp) that wil help too. Also an oral probiotic...Florastor kids is good. Can be mixed in their milk or juice.

Our daughters get rashy with highly acidic foods, including berries and tomatoes or anything made with them.

The thing that has worked best for us is vegetable oil. Odd, but it's great.

I would have her checked out by the Dr.to determine if the rash needs treatment more than over the counter.

You might try wiping her with a wet wash cloth instead of wipes. (Send some in to daycare.) Let her be bare as much as possible at home. We use Aquafore on everything.

Given the blister, you may want to have her see the pediatrician in case it is staff or yeast. The doctor could also provide you with information about foods to try or avoid.

Good luck,

I have lots of experience with bad diaper rashes and keeping them dry with LOTS of thick cream helps a lot! As for the source of the rash, a lot of kids get it from a particular food. My son used to get bad rashes if he had too many days of orange juice, blueberries or strawberries. The fruit would cause very acidic poop and in turn a bad rash. The minute I would take a break from these, the rash would clear up!
