Rice Cereal - Keller,TX

At my son's four month visit, the dr. said to go ahead and start rice cereal. I have been trying to get my son to eat it, but he keeps spitting it out. I feed him the cereal at the same time everyday and mix it with the formula he eats. We have been doing this for two weeks and he is still spitting most of it out. I don't know whether to keep trying or just stop for awhile and try again later. How long does is usually take for babies to get use to the spoon and cereal?

What can I do next?

My daughter has been on rice cereal since she was 3 and a half months and at first I had to make it as watery as my breast milk and let her suck it off the spoon for her to get used to it. You shouldn't introduce fruit or anything else for at least a week to make sure he doesn't have any reaction to the rice. Also my daughter will nto eat it unless it is warm if it is cold...out it comes!!! Good luck!!

It takes a month or two for them to get the hang of it... and even then, they still make a mess... lol. I know he doesn't seem to really be swallowing much of it, but this is practice. So keep it up, and by the time he needs something more than just formula, he'll be an old pro.

Yeah, don't give up, it takes a while. It's a whole new taste for them and a new texture they're not used to. But he'll eventually get the hang of it. Once you're able to start feeding him baby fruits, mix some of the fruit in with the cereal and it will be a huge hit! :-) Good luck!

I know it takes a while for babies to get used to the consistancy and the spoon feedings. You might want to try to thicken it up just a tad and with bananas which helped my son.

Good Luck.

Mix in the baby's bottle. You can add a tbl spoon or two to 8 oz of formula. Make sure to cut a slit in the nipple. I buy the rice that has apples or bananas in it. My baby loves it! And if your baby is not sleeping good at night by now, oh she/he will be!

Good Luck

Yes, I agree! Keep it up, it can take a while for them to get the hang of it. Also, you might try playing with the consistency of it a bit. I found that even tho the directions say to serve it at basically the same consistency of formula, my girls both ate it a lot better when I thickened it up a bit. Not too much, just enough to give it a more solid consistency, but still easy to swallow since they haven't quite mastered that yet. And, it will be messy for a while! Just be prepared with a large supply of bibs and washcloths!

my son starte a 4 mo and did not like it unless it was the mixed friut and make sure its ony a touch thicker than formula until they figure it all out he now loves banannas and avacados

My daughter did the same thing and I used a feeder bottle by Sassy which worked perfectly. I think the new food and new method was too much at one time. When I was able to start mixing the cereal with fruit I started with a spoon and she did well.
