I remember those days. I also work at a bank. And right around 7 months my daughter decided to use my ribs as monkey bars. The pain was so uncomfortable.I would go into the vault (since it was always nice and cool) and get down on my hands and knees and arch my back. After a few minutes and some deep breathing she seemed to go back to a more comfortable position. Good luck and congrats!

Ugh! Me too: with both. They would sit very low, and then puuuuuuush up on my ribcage. My ribs were so tender, even to touch: oy!

Just two months to go, and you'll get to go on the sudden-recovery-from-all-pregnancy-woes-and-lose-7-pounds-in-one-day diet.

I just laid in my hospital bed and said: "Ahhh! Do I feel great!" (and that was after two c-sections!)

Chin up! {{hug}}

Hi J. - I am a physical therapist and am also 7 montsh pregnant. If you don't think the baby is up in your ribs ( you can always try a deep squat at the counter to check and see if it helps him drop down), then I would suggest may be seeing a physical therapist to help increase mobility in your mid and upper back as it could be related to increasing breast size, strain of gaining weight, etc.. If you do have areas of restriction ins oyur mid-back, they are likley to worsen once baby is here due to position of breast feeding so best to look into it now for a better diagnosis because there are many things you could do at home to change it, manage symptoms now and help with afterwards too. If by some miracel, you are in the Phoenix area, I could see you. Feel free to call me at the CHamBo Wellness Center at ###-###-####.
A.

PS - I totally agree with those who suggested the therapy ball and stretching - great ways to help mid back and as others said, it might disappear the day you deliver. :)

Sorry you are having rib pains. I had something similar...but the pain originated in my mid-back on the right and radiated through to the front. I later found out (through ultrasound) that I had gall stones. Ironically, the pains only hurt me during pregnancy ( three children -- 15, 13, and 6 ). Ask your OB if your gallbladder could be the culprit. There is help for that if it is the problem.
Best wishes.

I had rib pain through my entire pregnancy with my son, it's horrible!! My Dr thought it was just all the organs shifting positions and putting pressure on them. What worked for me was an exercise ball. I would lay down on it and stretch my back over it, it felt soooo good! I loved relaxing on it after a long day. As if it's any consolation now, the rib pain disapeared immediately after delivering so it's at the very least, temporary. Hang in there and I hope this helps you!

hi J.. the pains are normal as the fetus pushes your organs up and down and all around your body. i had the same experience and unfortunately worked long hours so could not rest or lie down often. i brought a yoga mat to work and in another room, stretched pilates-style for a few minutes and used milk shakes to sooth the burn (b/c i thought it was heartburn at first). your employer should provide an unoccupied office for you to take a short break to relieve the pain. stetching is the only way i found to create some relief.

I had this pain too during both my pregnancies. It was AWFUL pain. It was worse than labor. I went to my doctor about it twice and she said it was probably the muscle stretching and there's nothing I can do about it. It got worse the larger I got and I tried everything to ease the pain. Finally, I put Icy Hot on it and rubbed and rubbed and rubbed. I also bought a wrap for athletic injuries and wrapped it under my breasts and wore a cami under my clothing. That helped me stand upright and act fairly normal when the pain was moderate. When I pressed against my ribs and kind of held myself together it helped, but who can do that all day?! This was so frustrating. No one could help, people thought I was a wimp, and it was constant. After I delivered my over 10lbs baby and I knew I had something to compare the pain to, I knew I wasn't any wimp. Right after my child was born the rib pain became dull and tingled like how an asleep foot feels. After a few days I had hardly any sensation at all in that area. With pregnancy number two (my kids are only 13 months apart) the pain was exactly the same but now it was on the right side. Same everything and it was miserable. Now my babies are one and two and I still don't have a normal feeling in my ribs. I have only heard of one other woman complaining about this. No one seems to no what I'm talking about.

Just try to push back on it with wraps, etc.

Please let me know if you discover anything out about this. I want to have more children, but I don't want to go through this again.

Good luck!

E.

I used an exercise ball to roll on whenever I had pains like that. I also tried to lay down for a few minutes on my back just to relieve the tension...It is almost over, just a few more months and you will have the greatest joy of your life. It is all worth it.

I had rib pain and it was there even once the baby dropped. I think that the top of my uterus was pressing against my ribs because if I pushed down on the top of my belly a little it would feel better. It would get to the point of numbness, itching, tingling of the skin in that area as well. It went away as soon as I delivered but I don't know of anything that helps. Maybe a chiropractor that is familiar w/preggo issues, a prenatal massage, or stretching would help. Just know that it does go away! Have your OB write you a note stating you must have a chair to sit on at work, then at least you won't be so uncomfortable.

Hi J.-

I am a prenatal yoga instructor and hear many moms complain of this same thing. I, myself, experienced it with both of my pregnancies. I think it is a combination of their feet pressing up on the ribcage and also the muscles and ligaments in that area stretching. I find that deep breathing (expand the ribcage and belly) really helps. In addition to the breathing, do stretches where you are reaching your arms above your head and stretching each side. When you stretch up, deeply inhale and when you release the stretch exhale. You can do side stretches sitting down or standing (at work, even if you can't always do the stretching, do the breathing). Overall, prenatal yoga seems to really help these "fun" little physical changes that occur during pregnancy. See if you can find a class in your area or DVDs are always good, too. Hope this helps! I am the mother of two beatiful daughters, ages 4 and 8 months.

The pain is totally normal. I asked around a lot and didn't find any solution; my ob-gyn just suggested Tylenol. Massage helped. My daughter was low too, but her feet were up by my ribs and she was kicking me there (as evidenced by ultrasound). You could try "talking" to your baby, and asking him to re-position if it's a similar problem. I've heard it can work!

It could be your Gull bladder. It is very common with first time moms to have this problem during and right after pregnancy. I would ask your doctor about it. Good Luck!!!! Warm baths and soft rocking chairs seemed to help me. I found myself walking around the room at 3:00 a.m.

does it happen when you're in a certain position? when i had my youngest i had that oroblem, i am 5' even and when he was born he was 20 inches, one inch longer than my other ones, and i sure could tell. i especially felt discomfort when i was sitting, but i noticed that if i lifted my arm and let it rest on top of my head (folding it over my head at the elbow) it helped tremendously. as though it was either stretching the area or lifting things internally and i could breathe better. rubbing the area in circular motion and moving to the side/changing positions would help also, but of course, standing for 9 hours at the bank there is not much you can do about either changing positions or lifting your arm over your head. i remember how uncomfortable that was. there are several photos of me sitting on the couch with my arm over my head and eating ice chips. every time i see them i laugh. that was quite a funny pregnancy, the things i had to do for comfort! ;p

I have a similar problem, although I'm not sure if it's the same as yours. But if gall bladder isn't your issue, we might have the same problem. I saw a doctor about it years ago (my oldest is now 20 yrs, my youngest is 14 months - so I've had it for a while and I'm told it will always be an issue). I can't remember what he called it - it starts with a T and ends with a Syndrome! Basically, it's not the ribs themselves, but the cartilage between the ribs that is causing the problem. It becomes inflamed the pressure hurts your ribs. He told me not to raise my arms above my head unneccesarily (I've noticed that when I sleep with my arms above my head I have an attack) and not to lift anything heavy. Sometimes ibuprofen can help. I often have my husband gently rub my back. You can also try ice (I've learned from experience that hot baths or showers feel great at the time, but don't provide any lasting relief). Good luck!

Does it happen after a meal? I had terrible pains with my second child, but they were more centered in the back. It ended up that it was my gall bladder which I had removed when the baby was 6 months old.

If you are considering staying home with the baby after he is born and would like a work at home opportunity feel free to contact me, we work part time and make a full time income.

Hi J.,

I had this terrible pain as well. I had a 30 minute drive home from work and would cry the entire way home, because of the pain. I also had a desk job and would have to kneel on the floor in front of my computer. Not comfortable when you're that pregnant. Anyway, I went to my ob-gyn and asked what I could do, because I couldn't stand it anymore. He recommended I go to a chiropractor. When I went, they found that the baby had dislocated a rib. It took 5 treatments, but in the end I felt much better. I definitely recommend going to a chiropractor during pregnancy! They have wonderful pregnancy tables where you can actually lay on you tummy. You don't realize how good it feels! I hope this helps.

I experienced horrible rib pain during both of my pregnancies. Sometimes it got so bad that my skin would actually begin to feel numb! I would try stretching as the other women suggested because it did help me too. Some of the time if there was a very specific area that was under pressure, I would massage it frequently. When I was far enough along to feel limbs when I rubbed my belly, I would sometimes very gently push their little foot, knee, or elbow out of the way to relieve the pain. Try to wear comfortable clothing and nothing that binds at the waist as it might worsen the symptoms.
