I have been a stay at home mom and now gearing up to apply for paraprofessional/ teachers aide jobs. One of my son is placed in special needs class (mild). I was wondering if it's helpful to mention about my son in my resume? It can show that I am already experienced taking care of my own special need child but at the same time they might reject since moms of special needs have a very demanding family life ....
Please suggest .
Thanks in advance

I suggest you include any training you've had, to include research and reading as related to special needs without mentioning your son. Let them ask about this during an interview. But only if your skills will be an advantage to the job for which you're applying.

Law does not allow asking applicant questions about family Or personal life. As you suggested having a special needs child may be considered a negative which could influence their decision. If it does influence them they are not allowed to mention it.

I don't if describing your learning would be opening the door to allow them to ask. I am not familiar with current law so suggest you talk with a lawyer or someone in Human Resources. I think I would not put anything related to your son on a resume. I would only mention specific skills and not include how you came to acquire them.

I wouldn't include anything that personal, but rather mention your skills as your other responses said. I think that moms make great professionals, but not all employers have caught on yet.
I would also create a LinkedIn Page and consider getting some cards made. The more you talk to people about your intent and leave your name with them (network) the better your chances.

if you are applying for a paraprofessional teacher's aid job working with special needs kids, i would include the information or any special training you have completed that would make you qualified to deal with special needs kids. If you are applying for other para/teacher's aid jobs, I would mention any special training you had received. Good luck with your job search.

On one hand telling about your son could be a good thing but on the other hand it could signify to them that you might be taking time off work to take care of him.

I truly don't know. If he's in school don't they know you already? I'd talk to the teacher that is working with him and the principle. Ask their opinion.

I wonder if the team doing the interviews and seeing the resumes will even care.
