Renal Dilation

I just wemt for my 18 week ultrasound on Tuesday. I was told that there was renal dilation of 6mm (they look for 3-4). I was also told not to worry and that this is still within the normal range. I go for another ultrasound on Monday. Has anyone ever gone through this? What was the outcome? Any good questions that I should ask?

Thank you !

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

I went for a second ultrasound. The left side is still slightly dilated, but the docotrs are not overly concerned. I have to go back at 32 weeks for another ultrasound. Hopefully things will still look good. Thank you for all of your advice.

One of my co-workers had this happen when she was pregnant with her son. Apparently it is more common in boys. Her son is fine, never had any kidney problems. He had to have a few check-ups with a specialist just to make sure that the kidneys were growing good, and everything was fine.

I think I did, though they never told me that phrase specifically, they said it in laymen's terns. At my first anatomy ultrasound everyone got real serious and kept me there for like 3 hours. There was fluid on my daughter's kidneys and they said it was one of the markers for down syndrome and that I would need an amnio. I also had to see a specialist throughout the whole pregnancy. For the firstsix months I couldn't even enjoy being pregnant while waiting for all of this to be finalized. In the end nothing was wrong at all. I think they see an unfinished product way too early and jump on diagnosis. which can be good if there actually is something wrong, but most of the time it catches up and it's fine. Hope I didn't waste your time, and don't worry.

I had the same issue with my son - I was told both kidneys were enlarged. They had me come back for several follow up ultrasounds throughout my pregnancy and by the last one at about 30 weeks? the kidneys were normal and he was born perfectly healthy. I freaked out when they told me about this, especially since he had a white spot on the heart which, when taken together with the kidneys, was a soft marker for Down's. Everything worked out firn and it's very common, especially for boys.
Good luck!!

My sister was told the same thing with her son, a co-worker of mine was told that with her daughter and both children are FINE. The kidneys start to function in utero and they may have been retaining fluid. I'm sure the next ultrasound will be fine.
