Remove Smoke Smell from Heirloom Doll
My daughter's just received a very special gift. Her birthfather's mother gave her a doll that was his when we has a toddler. What a very, very special gift. The one challenge is that is smells pretty strongly like smoke. My husband and I were prefer her to not snuggle and be comforted by something that smells like smoke. Any ideas on how to remove the smoke smell from it. It has a hard face and a cloth body. Thanks!

Could you soak it in cold water and Woolite? Or maybe spray it w/ Febreeze and leave it outside to air out? I don't know, but I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke - good luck!

Hi J.,
Someone mentioned putting the doll in the sun--that's good. Also the coffee beans in the plastic bag. If the coffee beans don't work, try newspaper or baking soda instead, those are supposed to remove odor too. I've used baking soda for stinky tupperware containers.
Do you think you could wash the doll? by hand, I mean; I wouldn't risk it in the machine. If so, try that, with maybe a vinegar/water rinse. Vinegar removes paint smells from the air when you are painting a room, maybe it would help?
Good luck and let us know what works!

J.,
In my experience, I would spray it with Lysol Disinfectant Spray first and let it dry, overnight. To remove any germs. Then using Febreeze after that has done the trick.
Goodluck.

Ozone will remove the smoke smell. You can take the doll to a fire restoration specialist or a local drycleaner and ask that it be put in an ozone room. They should be able to help you.

Be very careful of using ozone machines, they can break down and destroy a lot of fabrics.
Oxodol is what they recommended to us after the second house fire to remove the smell from the clothing, it works very hard to find anymore. I think the last time I saw it was at Marsh but you could do an online search. It works extremely well.
Wash the doll in white vinegar and water or use a baking soda solution to wash the doll and her clothes and then rinse in vinegar water. If it can take the pet stains and smell out of carpets and furniture (and it does) it can take the smoke smell out as well.
Another good product is PineSol. I use it to remove pet urine and smoke smells from my curtins etc. You need to let the item air dry after watching and in a day or so the Pine Sol odor is gone as well.

You could try fabreeze or Odo-Ban (sold at Walmart). However I would test them on a hidden spot before using.
Good luck.
