Relocating to Jacksonville, FL

My husband took a job in Jacksonville and we will be relocating to there in the summer. However, I do not know much about the area. I have one 5 yr old daughter who will be starting kindergarten in the fall. Any information about the Duval/Clay County area would be appreciated (schools, places to live, things to do, etc.). Thanks.

What can I do next?

I live in central Fla. and have only traveled through Jacksonville on my way somewhere else. All I know is alot of traffic. However if you type in Jacksonville,Fla on yahoo search you should find all you need to know. I just did and there are even homes for sale listings besides city information. One word of advise though. Hurricane season starts in 1 month and I would look for a home as far inland as possible to your husband's job location, away from any rivers or lakes and on high ground. While the majority of storms lately have come from the gulf they eften turn towards north Fla so you are more vulnerable near the coast. Choose a good solid block house away from the beach. Here are just a couple sites to browse

Hi S.. I lived in Jacksonville all my life until I moved to Tampa about 11 years ago. Jacksonville has grown and changed so much in that time, but my parents still live in the area so I still know good/bad areas. One of the good areas to live is San Marco (a lot of older beautiful homes -- comparable to S. Tampa) which is close to downtown, but not too close if you know what I mean. Avondale is another good area and convenient to downtown and other areas. Ortega also has some beautiful neighborhoods. Steer clear of the Arlington and Ft. Caroline areas. They used to be fabulous areas to live, but are no longer good areas. Another area that is very nice is the area around World Golf Village. My parents actually live in World Golf Village and that area is really booming. It is actually in St. John's county, but just over the line. They have a nice school right down the street from WGV. There are also a bunch of other new neighborhoods being developed in that same area.

As far as schools go, I'm sure there are some good public schools in the areas I mentioned, but if you are looking to do private school Bolles has always been known as the premier. It is right on the river and close to San Marco. It's a beautiful campus! There are some other private schools in that area that are good -- San Jose Episcopal comes to mind. I know that Assumption, Bishop Kenny, and Episcopal were all good private schools when I lived there, but I don't know if they are still good.

As far as things to do...there's the beach. In my opinion, the beach is not as pretty there, but to a child I'm sure it's all the same. There is a children's museum near San Marco also. It's been years since I've been there, but I always had a great time there as a kid. There are many parks, malls, etc. as well.

Well, I hope this info helps you a bit. If you have any other questions, you can email me at ____@____.com luck!

Hi S.,
I went to college in St. Augustine, and we used to go to Jacksonville for stuff to do. What a neat area!!! I have a contact for you... Bob Hovey and his wife, Dail, (what a friendly, sweet lady! I met her at a retreat recently) are starting a new church there, and have just moved there themselves, so they have recently been in your situation, trying to figure everything out! Even if you are not at all interested in church, they might be good resources for you to get settled. I emailed him, and he gave me permission to pass on their personal contact info. The website for the church is: www.sonlifejax.com . I'll send you a private email with their phone numbers. Best of luck!

I have lived in Florida all my life. Jacksonville is a good size city. I would look for a home/school just outside the city to the West. Should be less expensive and lest crowded. I would go to the county web site to get ratings for the schools.
Are you renting now or do you need to sell your home? I am a realtor with Century 21 and I would be glad to help you sell your home. Let me know.
