Relocating to Central Oregon
i will be moving to Bend Area in Dec 08. What are some better area to live. Best Schools. My husband and I will be semi retiring and Bend has all the outdoor recreation we could ever ask for. We live in South Carolina now. I am originally from Northern Cal and I am looking foward to getting back to the west coast. We will rent at first until we find an area we like. Hoping to ski a lot and enjoy small town living. Any advice or info about your area would be greatly appreciated. I will be renting a place before we arrive and i dont want to end up in a non kis friendly area.

We like the West side of town too, and have lived here near the college since 2001. The downtown area has some lovely historic homes that are close enough to walk to Drake Park and the library. Northwest Crossing has a nice neighborhood feel, Awbrey Village is pretty, hilly, and has some good views. Awbrey Glen and Awbrey Butte are more expensive and have homes on larger lots with mountain and golf course views and quiet neighborhoods. There are also some newer subdivisions in Southwest Bend that are on the way to Mount Bachelor. We also have friends who live way east near the Bend airport and north of town on the way to Sisters who live on 5 acre properties, if you are interested in rural living.

Hi C.,
We have been in CO for 10 years, I am also from Northern CA! We came here after 6 years in Idaho. I absolutely love CO, we live in Powell Butte, but if I lived in Bend it would definitely be on the West Side. I have a friend in the area who has a 15 mo old and can ask her if she knows which neighborhoods are more family oriented. She teaches dance at the Bend Athletic Club, so she knows lots of families with young children. There are so many fun things to do in Bend, lots of great restaurants, shopping and outdoor activities. There are a couple of options for skiing in this area and too many lakes to count. Also, if you like Rock Climbing, Smith Rock is internationally famous! The weather is almost always good, very little rain and lots of sunshine. Winters are not harsh, but you will get snow. Summers can be hot, but the nights in the High Desert are very cool. Let me know if there are specific things I can tell you.

Hi C.,
I currently live in Bend, with my husband, 15 month old and soon to be son. There are many great neighborhoods in Bend. We live in SW Bend, in a Neighborhood called River Canyon Estates. There are 2 great schools elementary schools, a number of parks, a pool, clubhouse, tennis courts, it's great. Let me know if you have questions about certain areas, or if you need a Realtor my husband is one. I am involved in playgroups, story time, and of course mamasource, I'd be happy to stay in touch and help your transition go smooth. Good Luck!

Hi C.,
I moved to bend in 1979 and started 1st grade here. I left for eight years with college and grad school but now am back home for the last 10 years. I grew up on the weststide of Bend out by a place called Shevlin Park. Northwest Crossing is nice but I must say that I don't live in there and it's a bit too congested for me and my husband. We now live with our son more south of Bend. We are only 2 miles from the Old Mill and love this area. Don't get me wrong...the westside is nice but don't rule out other areas. Bend is not too big and there are many great places to live in town. Northwest Crossing is more expensive too. IT has GREAT schools in that area but I think several of the schools are great here. You will find a big price difference in different areas of town. Make sure to look around and not just Northwest Crossing. You will love it here.

Hi C.-
We have lived in Bend for 5 years now and LOVE it. We have a 4 y.o. daughter and a almost 1 year old son. Our neighborhood is amazing! We live in Northwest Crossing on the west side of town. We are close to mountain biking, hiking, skiing, and downtown. The neighorhood is a mixed-use community, so we have schools, parks, small retail shops, restaurants, etc. all within blocks of our house. And, my daughter's Montessori preschool is in the neighborhood as well. It is truly a unique community. Check out the website: http://www.northwestcrossing.com/. Also, my husband is a realtor if you need one. His business partner has lived in Bend all his life, and his family goes back 3 generations in Bend, so they definately know Bend and Central Oregon. Here is their website in case you are interested: http://bendpropertylistings.com/.
Good luck!
