"Releasing the Binky"

My 15 month old is in love with her pacifier and I have no idea how to get her off that thing. She has Epilepsy and she's delayed in her speech and that pacifier is not helping her to talk any better or sooner. I didnt have this problem with my oldest cause she didnt suck one. Please Help!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thanks Everyone for all the great advice. The last few days she just havent really wanted her paci thanks goodness. but I'm gonna try and snip the nipple and see how that works. she's only been wanting it lately at bedtime, but not so much as usual though. I guess maybe she's getting tired of it. I hope so. I will keep you updated.

I know this is kind of late but with my daughter I found that out of sight, out of mind! If she did not see one she did not want it. I did not have this problem with my oldest either because he never used it.

I clipped the end of my daughters a little bit every couple of days and in about 2 weeks she could not suck it anymore.

I also just read about a mom who's daughter loved Elmo and she told her that Elmo could not buy passies on sesame street so they gathered up all her passies and mailed them to Elmo. They actually took them to the post office with a note to throw the box away once they left. I thought that was really cute.

Good luck! =)

J.,
Did any of these ideas work? My daughter is going to be 2 next month and I have been trying to prepare her for the "Paci fairy" but I don't think she understands. I only give it to her at nap and bed time but she will ask for her "paci" all day! Let me know what worked for you!
Thanks!

Hi J.! We took all our binkys to Santa claus to give to all the new babies for christmas. The easter bunny will be coming as well as St. Patrick. It worked for us. Also my hubby hid the binkys from me so I wouldn't cave and give them back, told me I'm too much of a softie when our son cries for his bink. We only had about an hour of whining, no real crying, and just kept reminding him that Santa had them for the new babies. Good luck!

I've never had this problem Jessica,my kids were thumb suckers but I do remember Marie Osmonds saying once that she would cut the nipple on the pacifier and she'd keep cutting it slowly over time till there was nothing left to suck. Not sure how that would work tho. Or maybe you can put something yucky tasting on the nipple?

Mine is 18m and I don't think she is personally ready to part with hers. Every kid is diffrent. But we started only giving it to her at nap, bedtime and car rides. This has worked for us. You could try this give it a feel. Yours may not be ready either. You could also use the binky as a "reward".
A friend told me when hers was like 26m they told her Elmo needed binkys for all the new babies at Sesame St because they didn't sell them there. She wrapped them uo took them to the Post Office let her daughter hand them to the clerk with a note that said "throw these out when we leave please" She never asked for one again. We are going to Sesame place this summer so we 'may' try this LOL
Good Luck
(this is NOT an easy one)

I have not yet had to break my son from his pacifier (he is only 6 mos) but my friend told that when she broke her sons off them she started clipping off the top of the pacifier and then every day would clip a little more off until all the plastic nipple part was gone. This worked well her. Hope it helps.

Hello J.. I just took my childs pacifier away and hide it in a drawer. When he looked for it, I searched everywhere with him. I told him it was lost. I replaced it with a stuffed animal of his choice. It worked for me. Good luck!! I hope this might be helpful to you.

I would not be too concerned. My daughter just turned 3 and about 2 months before her 3rd birthday we took that pacifer from her for good. She was at an age that she could understand what was going on.
This isa security for them and it is something they are not willing to give up so quickly.
Try limiting her use to only naptime and bedtime. That way you can work with her more on her speech during the day. Not only that, butonce that pacifer is gone, she will be spurting out words like no other.
My daughter went from bare minimal speech to never ending talking.
Good luck!
