hello all.... I am a little embaressed to ask this question but my registration is out and has been for a LONG time... i have been putting it off b./c i was not sure where to go if it expires and now i am so nervous driving around. I live in Richardson and would like to know where to go to get one? I know that i will have to pay more and possibly some fines for it being out for so long but that does not matter. Thank you!

What can I do next?

Be sure to call first before you show up. The site itself told me to go to McKinney, but when I got there they told me that there was an office right by my house and I did not have to drive all that way. They told me that if I would have called they would have given me the closest address.

You can usually go to your local county tax assessors office and renew it, do it online and pay an extra fee, or if you have the renewal thing that comes in the mail, some of the grocery stores customer service desks do it too. Used to get mine done at Albertsons when I lived in Carrollton.

Once your tags have expired, you MUST renew your registration IN PERSON (state law). The clerk will ask if the vehicle has been driven. Let your personal relationship with God be your guide on whether you want to be honest with the clerk, or not. The state has just adopted new license plates, so if your current plates are at least 5 years old, the clerk will also probably ask if you want new plates. (I recommend doing so, as age "wears off" the reflectability of the plates on night time visibility.)

Check the websites and make the calls as suggested in the other posts ~ no sense driving "across the country" when you can probably go "down the street" (and decrease your risk for a ticket when you're on your way to take care of it, anyway!).

No need to feel embarrassed about it....I actually knew a Dallas PO whose personal tags were also expired, but he was working so many hours, he couldn't get to the Tax Office to get it taken care of!!

I'm assuming that you don't have or don't know where the renewal letter is - that was supposed to mailed to you about 2 months before it expired. I would visit the county's website - do you live in Collin or Dallas county? Some parts of Richardson are in Collin County and some are in Dallas County.

The vehicle registration fees are paid to your local County Tax Assessor.

Collin Co: http://www.collincountytx.gov/tax_assessor/vehicles/vehic...

for Dallas Co.: http://www.dallascounty.org/department/tax/taxoffice_motv...
(click on motor vehicle FAQs)

Since you do not have "current registration" since you've let it expire... I don't think you can renew it online anymore. You will probably have to go to the office in person. Call to ask.

I don't know about Richardson but I am in Plano/Allen area and I always mail mine in. I usually get it back within a week or so.

I do know that Collin County has an option to register online as well.

Good luck!
