Red, Peeling/cracking Fingers on Two Year Old

Hey Moms-
My family just recovered from a respiratory infection- coughing/shortness of breath and weakness. I noticed the other day after taking my son out of the bath his index finger and thumb were peeling badly. It looked as though he had burned his fingers.
I heard this can occur after an illness or weather change. I just want to be sure these symptoms don't indicate a more serious condition. The peeling began to occur on his middle finger as well and then seems to have subsided- one hand has nearly healed.
thanks.

What can I do next?

M.,

You may want to contact the Pediatrician and ask this question. While, I've heard about that happening I can't make certain of what it is or if it isn't something more serious. A doctor is a better opinion with better knowledge.

Good Luck.

Hi M., the same thing happened to my son, although without the illness first. First it was one or two fingers on one hand, then more fingers on that hand until all were peeling. Then it started on the other hand! All the fingers then a little of the palms. Shortly thereafter it started on his toes. He wasn't in any pain, there was no pus or anything. The new skin underneath was very pink, new skin, but not sore. Eventually all fingers and toes completely peeled and now his skin is normal again. I did some research online and there is a name for it(I can't remember) but there is no cure. It may happen again, or it may not. Do a google search for peeling fingers and you will get alot of info. Don't worry though, it's unattractive but temporary.

My son, had the same symptoms last year but my his feet were also peeling. We took him to his pediatrician, well I should say my husband took him; the Doctor ask my husband if my son had any other symptoms but at the time he only had a slight cough, however a week prior to he had run a fever and just overall wasn't feeling very well. My husband neglected to give the Doc all the details, so therfore he said my son just had allergies and dry skin. We then found ourselves at urgent care a few day later and my son was diagnosed with Scarlett Fever. He as given a antibiotic shoot along with a prescription for liquid antibiotic and he was find within a few days.

This probably isn't what it is, but I had to resond just in case. Along with some other strange subtle symptoms, my nephew's fingers and toes were peeling. He has Kawasaki's disease. It is very very rare so that is probably not the case with your son, but if you have a good pediatrician that you trust you could ask. We were lucky and they caught it right away. I bet that it is something else, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

My 4 yo son had this happen a few times. After a visit to the Ped, Derm, Allergist and blood tests, we've discovered it was contact dermatitis. We STILL have not figured out what it is either...it's so frustrating. I think it might be from picking dandelions (sp?). I feared Kawasaki (rare-but not impossible to contract), hand/foot/mouth disease, fever can cause it/but no fever, eczema, fungus/same as athletes foot (creams didn't work), the list goes on. Before his fingers peel, they get very red and burn, so we've been able to take preventative measures (washing thoroughly and applying auquaphor or neosporin w/pain reliever).

Good luck!

Make sure to take him to the Dr. right away just in case it's Kawasaki's Disease. Although it probably isn't, it needs to be ruled out and the sooner the better because KD is easily treatable when caught early.

This could be an allergic reaction. It happened to me when I was 5-turned out I was allergic to Pennicillin.

You might want to have this checked out by a doc, as he could have a fungus infection (like athletes foot), or yeast. Was he on antibiotics?

Hi M.,

It sounds like exema. I had it as a child, the best thing to do is go to thedoctor and get some prescriptive cream. The over the counter stuff takes forever to work, and by then it has gotten worse! The prescriptive stuff will have it cleared up in a matter of days.

Good luck!

I get the redness, peeling and cracking and my son (22months) also does as well. It goes away and doesnt seem to bother him. My doc's said it is nothing to worry about. If I see it getting oozy or pussy or infected then give them a call. I would chalk it up to th weather. I know for my son, it seems to pop up when the weather changes or it the air is really bad (pollen) and he has a hayfever attack...or has been in the water a long time. He has eczema. I get the same thing from time to time for the same reasons...good luck!

Sounds a lot like athlete's foot. You could try an over the counter fungus product. As long as your son doesn't put his hands in his mouth with the medicine on it. The other cure for fungal infections is sunlight and keeping the skin dry. Try that first and see if that doesn't help. If it gets worse then I'd see a doctor for a culture. But it sounds just like the infections I get if I don't keep certain skin areas clean and dry (I am a diabetic.)
