Red and Welted "Wee Wee"

My niece is 2 1/2 and still in a diaper. She has a red welted rash on her privates. It sort of looks dry and scaley. She is very red on the inside and she doesn't really talk yet so I can't ask her if it hurts. I would appreciate any comments as to what it may be and what I could put on it. She has had it on and off for some time now.

What can I do next?

That's most likely a yeast infection. The best treatment is a topical application of miconazole, the same cream you buy that comes with the applicators (the 3-day is more than sufficient). Apply with a tissue after cleaning her 2-3 times per day until symptoms disappear, and follow with an extra 2-3 days. My girls have always been real sensitive to them, so I had to stop giving them baths (they both take only showers) and I always keep a tube of cream on hand. Hope this helps :}

It could be a yeast infection and if that is the case then the regular ointments won't work. I have two twin nieces that are almost 3 and still in diapers. They use to get these a lot as babies and still occasionally do now. You have to get an over the counter yeast cream. They have off brands but if normal ointment for diaper rash isn't working 3-4 days then I would try or contact a doctor about the possibility of a yeast infection.

My daughter gets yeast infections all the time and what you are seeing sounds just like it. Boudreauxs will not clear it up, so if you try that for a day and it still looks bad the next day it is most probably yeast.

As a woman, you know that isn't normal. Take her to a Dr to see what the problem is.

You need to take her to a doctor for anti bactical drugs, sounds like to me she might have gotten poop poop on her privates, or a real bad uruine track infection.

It sounds to me like diaper rash or yeast infection. My baby recently had the same thing and it cleared up when I used diaper rash cream. But it might also be a yeast infection. If it doesn't go away in a day or two using diaper rash cream, she should see the doctor about it being a yeast infection. If it is just diaper rash (mine gets it there a lot as opposed to the rear because she sleeps on her stomach and apparently the wetness accumulates where gravity dictates) I have discovered that a lot of people don't let the area dry thoroughly after cleaning/wiping before putting the cream on. If it doesn't get completely dry (I fan the area for several minutes and let it air dry) before putting on the cream then the cream just seals in the moisture close to the skin which actually makes it worse, as the point of the cream is to seal out moisture and protect the skin from it. I feel silly saying that because I would assume everyone knows that, but every single family member of mine hasn't done that when they've helped out with diaper changes, so maybe people just don't realize. And many kids aren't potty-trained til 3 or a little older, so she should go at her own pace when she's ready, I woudn't be concerned about that.

J.: First of all just let me say at 2 1/2, your niece should be potty trained! Is her mom work with her on that? As for her rash, it sounds like she may have a severe case of diaper rash, along with a severe case of a yeast infection (especially since it's red on the inside). My suggestion is that her mom should take her to the doctor ASAP. My daughter is now 18, but when she was a baby, she suffered with yeast infections and her pediatrician gave me some prescription ointment to apply inside and on the outside of her private area. But, all of her problems stopped once she was out of her diaper, at about 1 1/2!

Good luck! Hope this helps!

Hopefully, she will start potty training soon. By Spring is the best time, earlier is even better. The BEST remedy is Boudreaux's Butt paste.They sell it at Walmart and most drug stores in LA. If you live somewhere else, google it and you can buy it online. That is my remedy for anything in the diaper area. It even works for adults when they have hemmorhoids(sp?). It is a great a great inexpensive way to heal diaper rash, redness and irritation. We didn't have to ask the doctor to prescribe anything once we started using the Boudreaux's butt paste. If it doesn't help then your niece may have to see her pediatrition. Good luck!

Check with her doctor. She could have a yeast infection and vulvitis. These are common in young children in diapers. There is a creme the doc will give you that clears it right up.

I agree... try boudreaux (sp?!?) butt paste from WalMart. Just apply it to the outter part of her private area (not inside). I would put some on everytime you change her. Be sure to wash it real good that night and put it on once more. If it's not cleared up by the next morning, I would call her peditrician. I really think that would work though... my daughter has had simular to that as well, and it worked great!!
