Recurring Thrush

My 6 month old keeps getting oral thrush???!!!! She is bottle fed. I have cleaned and sterilized everything I know too. Even bought new nipples each time after treatments. Things that could not be washed or sterilized I have just thrown away. Even have tore apart her car seat and washed everything including the straps. Her pediatrician puts her on Diflucan each time. And he has done blood work on her. She is chubby and healthy otherwise. Has anyone had this problem??? If so what did you do???

What can I do next?

See if the doctor will give you a RX for Nystatin. My son had thrush as a baby and his doctor didn't give him anything and said it would clear out after a few weeks...and it did. My daughter got it and it bothered her so they gave her a Rx for Nystatin and it cleared out and didn't come back.

Yes def ask for Nystatin. My 7 week old son had it the first week he was born. The dr gave Nystatin and by the 3rd day could see a tremendous difference. I also had to get the Nystatin cream cause he developed a rash from swallowing the thrush. Maybe what the dr is giving you isn't strong enough to get ride of it totally. Call the dr and ask if they can give you Nystatin. Best of luck!

I dealt with this everyday for the year I nursed my son. We never could clear it up completely. We tried Diflucan, Nystatin, Gentian Violet, Vinegar, some weird mixture I had to get from a compounding pharmacy and on and on. We just couldn't clear it up. If you are breast feeding, make sure you treat yourself.
It sounds like it is in in her system pretty deep...throughout her body. Have you checked to make sure she doesn't have a yeast infection? My son had a rash all around his privates. We were able to clear that part of it up. Anyway, try yogurt and other pro/prebiotics. Make sure the flora inside her body and your own is in balance. I hope that helps and Good luck.

I just posted this exact question the other day. You can look at the answers I got, but it seems like it just happens and there isn't much you can do if you are already sterilizing everything, which it sounds like you are. I know how annoying it is. And I am breastfeeding so I also have to take medicine. My son is 3 months and today is the last day of meds for his 3rd round of thrush.

have you tried vinegar washes and gentian violet? All those sugars in formula to make the taste tolerable isn't helping, since the yeast thrives on sugar. I'd wash out her mouth with either/or vinegar & water or gentian violet after each feeding. Soak bottles and nipples in vinegar water and coat the nipple with gentian violent before you feed her. Very similar to what many breastfeeding Moms use when they find out antibiotics aren't a cure all.

The nystatin works wonders. I used a mixture that I found online

8oz water
1 drop liquid dish soap
1 teaspoon of baking soda

wipe baby's mouth out several times a day with the solution

Here are some others that I found:

Yes! We had it too, it's horrible! Are you treating yourself too? You can keep passing it back and forth to each other if you're nursing. So if you are, make sure you're putting the Nystatin on your nipples after nursing, and wash all your bras in hot water. Also, our pediatrician put our little guy on oral nystatin. What finally worked was throwing out all his pacifiers, even though I was sterilizing them in boiling water after each use. Strange, but after that we were finally cured.
